25+ Cruise Mistakes to Avoid (That Most People Don’t Think About)

June 5, 2026 by Dana Zeliff Leave a Comment

Cruising is often marketed as one of the easiest, most stress-free vacations you can take and in many ways, it is. Your accommodations, dining, entertainment, and transportation between destinations are all bundled together, which is exactly why so many people fall in love with cruising.

But here’s the part most people don’t realize until after their first cruise: Cruising doesn’t operate like a typical land vacation.

Now, I know what you’re thinking “Of course a cruise is different, it’s a ship, not a hotel.”

And you’re right.

But the differences that catch people off guard usually have nothing to do with being on the water. They’re the little things most travelers don’t think about until they’re already onboard like your phone connecting to an expensive maritime network, your ship operating on a different time zone than the port you’re visiting, or finding out that the power strip you packed was confiscated at embarkation.

The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. Knowing what to expect before you sail can help you avoid common cruise mistakes and focus on what really matters – enjoying your vacation.

I’ve worked with many cruise clients, and I can tell you this with confidence: The biggest issues rarely come from big mistakes… they come from the little things people didn’t know to think about.

So before you sail, here are the cruise mistakes to avoid including the obvious ones, the overlooked ones, and the ones that tend to catch even experienced travelers off guard. Sometimes I even make these mistakes.

The Most Common Cruise Mistakes

1. Bringing the Wrong Power Strip: This is one of those rules that surprises even veteran cruisers. On cruise lines like Royal Caribbean & Celebrity, anything with surge protection, extension cords, or multi-outlet expansion is typically prohibited. Even if it’s marketed for a cruise, it can be confiscated during boarding.

Cruise cabins are limited on outlets to begin with, which is why people bring their own but unfortunately, not all are allowed on every cruise line.

Instead, bring a cruise-approved, non-surge USB hub. It solves the problem without risking confiscation. It’s easy to forget and grab the wrong charging block because it was fine on your last cruise. You don’t want to have to stop at the naughty table to pick up your power strip at the end of the cruise.

Another good idea is to bring a European travel adaptor to take advantage of the type E plug.

Disney Destiny Review 2026: Is Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship Worth It?

May 7, 2026 by Dana Zeliff Leave a Comment

If you’e considering taking a Disney Destiny cruise, I’m here to give you my honest review (no sugar coating here!) As a travel advisor who has cruised a lot, this ship feels different from other Disney ships and, of course, is a completely different experience from other mainstream lines.

I sailed the Disney Destiny with my husband on a 4-night Bahamian cruise, and between the two of us, we experienced a lot of what this ship has to offer. This was a rare mom and dad only Disney trip, since our daughter is in her first year of college and we sailed during exam week.

Here’s everything you need to know before booking the Disney Destiny cruise including what genuinely wowed us and what fell more than a little short.

What Is the Disney Destiny Cruise Ship?

The Disney Destiny is one of the newest ships from Disney Cruise Line, launched in November 2025. She’s the third Wish-class ship, following the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure.

The Disney Destiny cruise ship sails year-round from Port Everglades. What makes the Destiny stand out is its bold Heroes and Villains theme. This is completely different from every other Disney ship. The Lion King, Hercules, Black Panther, Cruella de Vil and even Spider-Man swinging off the stern are all new features on the Disney Destiny.

The Disney Wish leaned into princess magic while the Disney Destiny feels more dramatic, modern and way more adult.

The detail is incredible (as always). From the port terminal to the stairwell artwork, this ship is immersive in a way Disney just does better than anyone else.

Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas Review: 4-Night Bahamas & Perfect Day at CocoCay Cruise Guide

October 13, 2025 by Dana Zeliff 2 Comments

Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas is advertised as “the world’s biggest weekend” and the ship definitely lives up to the hype!! As the newest Oasis Class ship, it’s packed with dining, entertainment, and activities for travelers of all ages. Whether you’re sailing as a family, couple or group of friends, this ship is the perfect choice for a short, fun filled Bahamas getaway.

Currently, Utopia of the Seas sails 3 and 4-night cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida, visiting Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay. We sailed on the 4-night itinerary, which included two port days and one sea day in an oceanview balcony cabin. If it’s in your budget, I highly recommend doing a back-to-back cruise – there’s just so much to explore on this ship that four nights barely scratches the surface.

About Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas:

Utopia of the Seas brings fresh design touches and artistic details that make it feel more glamorous and high-end than any previous Oasis Class ship. You’ll find the classic favorites like Central Park, the Boardwalk, and the Royal Promenade, but also exciting new venues such as Pesky Parrot, a tropical cocktail bar and Royal Railway, an immersive dining experience unlike anything at sea.

This review focuses on our personal experience aboard the 4-night sailing – for ship-specific information, itineraries and more new features, check out my separate Utopia of the Seas Tips & What’s New Guide.

Utopia of the Seas Day #1 – Embarkation & First Impressions

We boarded Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas around 1 p.m. after a brief delay caused by an electrical outage at the port. Even with the power issues, check-in took only about 45 minutes and staff did a fantastic job keeping things organized once power was restored.

Tip: Join the Facebook group for your sailing. Fellow passengers were posting live updates about the outage, which helped us time our arrival perfectly and avoid long lines.

After boarding, we headed straight to Solarium Bistro for a lobster and stone crab lunch — a special perk available only on embarkation day. There was also a similar seafood spread in Windjammer featuring fresh lobster, crab, and shrimp. Icon of the Seas offered the same perk during its first year, but it’s unclear how long it will continue on Utopia. She’s already been sailing over a year and seafood is still an embarkation day special.

If seafood isn’t your thing, Park Café offers great salads and sandwiches in a quieter setting or you can grab a table at a specialty restaurant to skip the embarkation crowds.
