20 Things to Know Before Visiting London

Are you visiting the UK for the first time?  Or maybe just want to learn a few more tips before traveling to London?  London quickly became one of our favorite cities with the seemingly endless attractions, great restaurants and pubs, and abundant shopping   The hustle and bustle of the city is contagious, but there are a few things to know before visiting London for the first time.

Things to Know Before Visiting London

1. The UK uses the British Pound (£) and the value to USD does fluctuate so be mindful of conversions when planning your budget.

2. Since we’re on the topic of money, lets talk about tipping.  In restaurants, the average tip is 10-15%, although you need to confirm it hasn’t automatically been added to your bill.  You can add the tip to your credit card, but cash is preferred.   Not all establishments pass on the tips paid on a card to the servers.  You’ll even see on some menus that all tips are given to the servers.  Personally, I found this rather curious. I would have assumed the servers always got the tips, but apparently that is not the case.

You can tip the same 10-15% rate for taxis, but most people just round up or leave £1.  Tip more if its a long ride or the driver helped with luggage.

You don’t tip at the pub if you’ve ordered drinks from the bar.  However, if you are getting table serve you’ll want to tip.

London is known for it’s history and famous landmarks, but there is more to the city than Big Ben and Tower Bridge.  We’ve put together a list of 5 unique London experiences to try on your next visit.  Encounter some of TV’s most lovable characters, take in sweeping views of the city, and enjoy delicious food and afternoon tea. Experience a different side of London with kids on your next holiday.

Take a Trip to the Kingdom of Far Far Away:

Lucy at DreamWorks-Tours Shrek’s Adventure

DreamWorks Tours: Shrek’s Adventure is a unique experience that combines live shows and special effects. Let Donkey take you on a 4D bus tour through London to meet Shrek, Pinocchio, the Muffin Man and the Magic Mirror. After escaping from witches and Rumpelstiltskin, have your adventurer pose for pictures with Shrek and play games with the Penguins in Madagascar.

*This experience is best with younger children and should be reserved in advance.

Afternoon Tea with a Kid-Friendly Twist:

No trip to London would be complete without afternoon tea. Typically served between 4pm – 6pm, this British tradition can make for a magical experience when visiting with children. A couple of fun recommendations for kid-friendly afternoon tea include:

Charlie and the Chesterfield Afternoon Tea At The Chesterfield Hotel. This will be a delight for Willy Wonka fans. This chocolate themed tea features traditional finger sandwiches and scones plus children can enjoy their own special treats from the kids menu. Get your golden ticket and savor an afternoon of tea with a fizzy lifting cake.

The Paddington Bear movies rekindled our love of the children’s literary character from the 1950’s. Start your day at Paddington Station to pose with the bronze Paddington Bear statue, then follow the Pawprint Trail to find more Paddington statues. Even if you can’t follow the full itinerary, kids will love taking selfies and even getting their own bear at the Paddington Bear Shop, either at the station or the famous toy store, Hamleys.

London is one city that I can’t seem to stay away from. It’s constantly calling my name with something new and exciting to experience. While we love traditional sightseeing, it’s always great to get out and try something unique. Jump on a bus with Donkey, hunt down Paddington Bear, sip tea like Alice and see London from the rooftops. Kids won’t stop talking about their unique London experiences!

At Thornbury Castle England You Can Be a Princess for a Night (Stay in a Castle in England!)

Have you ever dreamed of staying in a real-life castle?

When planning our road trip through England, I made it my mission to include spending the night in a castle. What little girl wouldn’t want to be a Princess for a day? Okay, and maybe her mom too!  It’s like a fairytale come true! During an extensive search on where to stay in a castle in England, I stumbled upon the Thornbury Castle England Hotel and knew it was the perfect place for my family.  We chose to spend two nights here.  I wanted us to experience everything the castle had to offer without being rushed for time.

Driving up, the entire family was alive with nervous anticipation.  Even my moody preteen had a hard time containing his excitement.   Coming through the gates and around the bend, the imposing castle loomed into view. You can almost imagine what it was like for the noblemen and commoners of the 1500’s.   It’s astonishing to think that a Duke built this as his home.

Three arrows down, one to go
I can do it too!

Fancy a romantic meal in the garden?

In addition to checking the big castle box, Thornbury Castle is an ideal luxury hotel for families. It boasts 15 acres of grounds and gardens, perfect for kids to run around. Youngsters can even try their hand at archery or croquet. Mine had a blast with the bow and arrow in the company of two other kids also staying at the castle.  K had done a bit of archery in cub scouts, so he hit the mark every time, once he got warmed up. Simply ask at reception to have the games set up. The staff was more than happy to accommodate the kids needs.

K & Lucy loved running around and playing hide & seek in the walled garden. The Yew trees made ideal hiding places. Had it not been so chilly at the time of our visit, the gardens would have been the perfect place to have a picnic. While in the gardens, take a moment to look for the holes in the stone wall. Bees used to be kept here as honey was the main source of sugar.

I love the lights!

Our guest room, the Portleathen, was a quintessential castle retreat. The bedchamber included a massive four-poster bed – fit for a queen.  I could have spent an entire day just lounging around in it. I almost did, until Derrick forced me to get up, so we could explore. The brute!  The bed enveloped you like a cocoon with a downy soft mattress and fluffy pillows. The master also included a flat-screen TV, plenty of closet space, and a dressing table. Our window looked right out to the incredible ORIGINAL Tudor chimneys.  They are over 12 ft high,  still in working order AND said to be the finest in the world.

The bathroom was large and included a great tub that Lucy took full advantage of both nights. The provided shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion were lovely.  I would have liked a bit more water pressure in the shower, but getting to look at the lovely old faucet made up for it.  The bathroom had an old-world feel with modern conveniences.

One Week Family Road Trip in England Itinerary – Visiting the Cotswolds From London

November 30, 2019 by Dana Zeliff 17 Comments

road-trip-in-england-itinerary

One of the best ways to explore England is by car.  Yes, the public transport system in the UK is awesome but there are so many villages that you’ll miss if you don’t go by auto.  We wanted to explore the countryside of England and see more than just the typical tourist destinations.  And we only had one week to pack in as much as possible.  Follow along on  our “family road trip in England itinerary” to see what we did and what we would do differently.  While there are many destinations and road trip itineraries you could follow, we found this to be the perfect way to visit the Cotswolds from London. You may, however, want to skip the trip to the hospital. Continue reading for more on that!

My biggest concern with road tripping in England was driving on the opposite side of the highway.  Derrick did a LOT of research before we started our trip.  He looked at images of the roads, general tips for driving on the left side and information on UK road signs.  We were surprised to find how easy the road signs were to follow in England.

Auto Europe Car Rental

We booked our rental car through Auto Europe, which compare’s the best rates.   We typically go with the smallest and least expensive option.  For our road trip in England, we once again chose a small car (some of those country roads are TINY) but we upgraded to a diesel to save on gas money and went with an automatic.  Usually we lease a manual transmission, as it’s significantly cheaper in Europe.  For this trip, we didn’t want Derrick having to deal with shifting with the opposite hand AND trying to stay in the left side of the road.  While it will cost you a bit more, he definitely recommends going with the automatic.  We also spent under 75£ for diesel during our entire trip.  That is significantly less than we would have paid for gas.

Lots of arrows and road signs
Lots of arrows and road signs

Driving on the left ended up being easier than Derrick thought.  While he did keep drifting on the first day, he quickly became used to the difference.  Because the driver sits on the opposite side of the car,  it made sense for him to drive on the left side of the road.  And because I was sitting in what “should” have been the drivers side,  I kept feeling like I needed a steering wheel and wanted to adjust the rearview mirror so I could see behind us.

The second morning of our trip, Derrick and Lucy went to get the car while K and I checked out of the hotel.   K and I walked up to the car as Derrick was getting out laughing and shaking his head.  I didn’t realize what was going on or notice which side of the car he was getting out.  Apparently he got in on the left side as he normally would in the US, buckled his seatbelt, then realized the steering wheel was on the other side.  We won’t mention that even after a week, I was still trying to get in on the wrong side of the car…..

I think the biggest help during our road was a Garmin Navigation System.   We purchased ours in France, so it’s a slightly different model what what you can get in the States.  I can’t overstate  how having a GPS helped on this road trip. It’s possible to rent one though the car rental agency, but we decided that  it was a better investment to purchase our own. Whether you should buy or rent will depend on how often or much you plan to travel. I only missed our turn a few times and during each instance the navigation system instantly altered the route.

Another plus is the postcodes  system in England.  The Royal Mail has given every deliverable location a unique code.  These postcodes are an abbreviated form of address with the first letter(s) indicating the general location.   Making it super easy to plug it into our navigation system and head off to our next destination.

Tip – write down the postcodes for each destination on a sheet of paper in advance.  This will be helpful when you’re plugging in each stop during your road trip.

One Week Family Road Trip in England Itinerary

Day #1 – Arrival & Oxford

Herford College – the Bridge of Sighs is out of the image on the right.

Busy streets of Oxford
The well is fed from the river and overflows as the river rises

We flew into Gatwick Airport on Easy Jet around 10am.  Another option would have been British Airways into Heathrow, but that was more expensive.  We also planned an early flight to maximize our time in Oxford.  If you arrive late, you will need to add an extra day.

Starting off our exploration of the Cotswolds from London , we picked up our rental car and drove from Gatwick Airport, on what we consider the wrong side of the road.   We spent the day exploring Oxford. This was probably the most stressful day of driving.  I’m still in awe that Derrick didn’t end up turning right on one of those roundabouts.

After dropping our bags off at the hotel, we parked our car and took the shuttle bus into the center of Oxford.  The shuttle bus was inexpensive and we didn’t waste time finding parking in the city or paying an expensive parking fee.

We saw the Bridge of Sighs, Carfax Tower, Magdalen College/Chapel, the Covered Market, Radcliffe Camera, the Old Bodleian Library & countless other sites.

Due to time constraints, we chose not to go on any of the University tours.  We simply wandered around the town viewing most of the tourist attractions from the outside. We even saw the College tree from Harry Potter.  Under the tree, Draco Malfoy says to Harry “you won’t last 10 seconds.” While you can only see the top of the tree, it’s still cool to pass by.  I wanted to see the “Great Hall” from Harry Potter in Christ Church College, but we missed visiting hours. Poor  planning on our part If you want to see more Harry Potter filming locations, check times and plan ahead.

I spent a lot of time trying to convince the kids how cool it would be to attend Oxford University. K now has the sweatshirt, but doesn’t seem too interested in picking out colleges.

We had dinner at Bill’s Restaurant. The food was delicious and we loved the decor. I thought it was hilarious when a college guy came in and told the hostess they were having a party over the weekend, so he was apologizing in advance for the noise.

If you want to see more of Oxford, you’ll need a full day. Our itinerary only included a half-day visit.
