10 Things Not to Do When Boarding a Plane

It’s time for your holiday! You arrive at the airport, check your bags, make it through security and settle in at the gate to wait for your flight. Finally, boarding is announced. The queue forms and people start making their way down the gangway.

Suddenly, you’re stopped.

Stuck standing around outside of the plane, waiting for your chance to be greeted by the crew. You step onto the plane only to stand around again in the narrow aisle, just wanting to sit down so the plane can take off.  Sometimes things move fairly quickly and other times it seems like you will NEVER make it to your seat – even though you only need to get to row 9. Sound familiar?

Beat the Boredom – 12 Tips for Surviving Airport Layovers with Kids

March 3, 2022 by Dana Zeliff 4 Comments

Airport layovers, as an adult, can be boring and frustrating, but airport layovers with kids can be downright distressing.  That’s why I strive to turn our inevitable layovers into an extension of our vacation.  Being prepared, getting some rest and turning wait time into game time can help reduce the stress.

Because the reality is that you will, at some point, experience layovers. Flights with layovers tend to be much cheaper than direct flights.  Sometimes it’s just not possible to get a direct flight between destinations.  Other times circumstances beyond our control, such as weather or aircraft delays, result in more time than expected hanging around the terminal.

Luckily, this does get a bit easier as kids get older.  At least they no longer need constant attention.  But being hungry, tired and bored can amplify emotion in an already moody teen.

Don’t land stressed and frustrated!  Gone are the days of sitting around at the gate twiddling your thumbs trying to keep the kids calm.  Here’s our 12 suggestions for surviving airport layovers with kids:

Know Your Gate Location:

We like to find our gate right away, so we know where the aircraft will be located.   I don’t want any surprises when it’s time to board.  I can’t count the number of airports we’ve been in where it takes 30+ minutes to get from one side or terminal to another.  Recently, I swear we walked for 15 minutes down a never ending corridor before we even saw the first gate number.

Find a Deserted Gate

However, instead of waiting at our gate, I like to hunt down an empty gate.  You might find these closer to the end of the terminal.  Here, kids can be a little louder and more active without disturbing other flyers.  If kids are little, they can run around the chairs to get some of their energy out, spin in circles or have a mini dance party.

How to Avoid Discomfort on Your Long Haul Flight

I don’t think there is anyone on earth who enjoys a long haul flight! However, if we want to enjoy these far-flung destinations then there is very little we can do to avoid them! Whilst many airlines nowadays do as much as they can to make these flights bearable with in-flight entertainment and free refreshments, they can still be somewhat uncomfortable.

Here are a few ways to make your next long haul flight a little more comfortable.

Invest in blue light blocking glasses

One of the most common things to do on a long haul flight is to either use the in-flight entertainment or use a mobile or tablet device to watch your favourite shows. Couple this with the dark lighting of the cabin and you are likely to give yourself extremely sore and tired eyes. Blue light which is emitted by the screens will trick your brain into thinking that it is daytime, so can also play havoc with your sleeping pattern.

ArtsBot Coupon Code

Parents know that traveling with kids is not always easy. Kids get bored sitting in hotel rooms and while in transit to each destination. The easy solution is screen time, but that really does nothing but keep the kids quiet and “zoned out” during the trip. Enter the Artsbot art kits. They help cure boredom, reduce screen time, and spark imagination in kids of all ages!

While traveling, parents often see no other option but to put their kids in front of digital screens to offer a distraction. The ArtsBot kits get kids away from the screen by offering creative, entertaining solutions for families on the go.

They kits are TSA compliant – no sharp objects, scissors or mess!  Pack your child’s Artsbot kit in the carry-on bag then sit back while they enjoy hours of creativity.

Lucy recently tried the Button Parade kit to design her own jewelry. She was eager to get creative and make her own button and bead jewelry. She created one bracelet then decided to stash her kit away in the Artsbot bag, all ready for and looking forward to our flight to Marrakech next month. No iPad for Lucy on that flight!

Business Class
Overnight flight

Flying back to Nice from the USA, we were again ensconced in luxury. We settled into our roomy, comfortable seats and prepared ourselves for the 7 hour flight. The business class seats lay flat, come with a ton of storage and a nice media center.  I’m not sure I’ll ever get my kids back in economy for a long-haul flight again!
