Pictures from the Road – Easy Guide to Understanding French Road Signs

Driving in France can be challenging, especially if you can’t read French.  The thought of getting in the car and navigating roads at 60+ mph in a foreign country can be scary.  But really, it’s pretty much the same as driving in the U.S.A. and most other countries.  The exception being the UK, as they drive on the wrong side of the road 😉  French road signs are pretty straightforward and use a lot of universal symbols.  However, it is important to know what those signs mean and how you should interpret them.  This guide will help you travel safely and successfully in France.

On our recent road trip, I took pictures of signs we passed on both the interstate and local roads.  A few times I had to have the kids translate a word or two for me.  It’s so nice to travel with kids that are pretty much fluent in the language!  But first, lets look at some key vocabulary.

French Vocab.

Travaux = works (ie. road work)
Attention = attention
Ouvert = open
Fermé = closed
Rappel = reminder (you’ll see this under the speed limit signs as a reminder to the speed limit. It’s a reminder to you that you are still in that speed zone – not that it has changed)
Prochaine sortie = next exit
Sortie = exit
Péage – toll road
Sauf = except
Cédez le passage = yield or give way
Toutes directions = all directions
Route barre = road closed
Sens unique = one-way
Suivre = follow
Arrêt = stop
Serrez à droite = keep to the right
Allumez vos feux = Turn on your lights
Aire de XX = rest stop of X town
Gendarmerie = police station
Rue = street

Guide to French Road Signs

It is also important to note that in France there is priorité à droite or the right-of-way is to cars entering from the right. This is always the case unless you have a sign with a yellow triangle giving you priority. While you won’t really find people merging into your lane as if you weren’t there as they enter the highway, they do have the right of way.   If there is an accident, you are at fault.  This is opposite of in the U.S., where priority is given to those already on the highway.

MSC Aurea Experience – What’s Included & Is It Worth the Cost?

Booking with MSC cruises is different than booking with other cruise lines.  Guests customize their cruise by selecting from several experiences.   The experience based pricing structure allows guests to personalize their cruise based on their unique needs and wants.   We purchased the MSC Aurea Experience during our recent sailing on the MSC Magnifica.  Since we weren’t entirely sure what to expect with the experience, we’ve created this article to help you understand what’s included and to help you determine if it’s worth the cost.

The MSC Area experience has changed drastically over the years. Previously, the benefits far exceeded the cost, in my opinion. As the benefits have changed (been reduced), you need to do a little research to see what’s right for you.

Can You Visit Las Vegas on a Budget? Tips for Affordable Travel in Sin City

If you’re on a tight budget, there might be certain types of holidays and destinations that feel out of reach. Las Vegas is probably one of the first ones that springs to mind. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Entertainment Capital of the World can be enjoyed no matter what your budget is. You just need to know how.

This guide will give you all the insider information you need to enjoy Sin City without breaking the bank.

Finding the Right Accommodation

When you think about Las Vegas you’re probably imagining decadent casino resorts, penthouse suites, and 24/7 amenities that will cost you the earth. But did you know that there are plenty of cheap hotels in Las Vegas and other accommodation options that will fit your budget?

To make your accommodation more budget-friendly, look for hotels that are not directly on the Strip. For example, The Silver Sevens Hotel & Casino is only minutes away from this iconic street, but offers rooms from $64 per night. You can experience a taste of luxury without the expensive price tag while still being close to the action.

If your heart is set on staying on the Strip itself, you will have to pay a little more. But, there are still affordable options out there. Flamingo Las Vegas offers rooms from $90 a night, meaning you can have a quintessential Vegas experience while sticking to your budget.

If you don’t mind sharing a room, consider the Bungalows Hostel. It might not be for everyone, but it’s a great way to cut costs and even make some new friends. However, if this isn’t for you, check out vacation rentals on Airbnb. There you’ll find plenty of affordable options that could provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Top Tip: Take advantage of off-peak deals and cash in any hotel reward points you might have accumulated. This might help you upgrade your accommodation without any additional cost.

What Alaska Cruise Excursions Do We Recommend?

March 5, 2025 by Dana Zeliff 4 Comments

The allure of sailing past glaciers, venturing into the rugged wilderness and admiring the quirky frontier towns entices more than a million people per year to take an Alaska cruise.  An Alaska cruise is not one of those vacations where you want to skip a port and relax on the ship.  There are too many wondrous adventures waiting that make it necessary to plan your Alaska cruise excursions carefully.

In addition to sharing my own experiences I gathered recommendations from my in-laws who have cruised to Alaska multiple times, even taking the land and sea tour once to get their insight on the best Alaska cruise excursions. They always sailed with Royal Caribbean, but many of the excursions are similar, regardless of the ship you choose. You can also book some of these independently (i.e., not through the cruise line.)

For those a bit more adventurous, a friend of mine highly recommends 2 tours she took sailing on Princess with kids.

What Alaska Cruise Excursions Do We Recommend?

The Top 4:

  1. The train in Skagway – Great way to get away from the cities and see more nature.
  2. Free walk around Ketchikan – A great inexpensive way to explore.
  3. Whales watching in Icy Strait- I highly recommend, if in your budget.
  4. Helicopter and Glacier Trek in June – Expensive but an incredible experience.

Tourist Attractions in Bratislava Kids Will Enjoy!

March 2, 2025 by Dana Zeliff 26 Comments

We had two busy days exploring Bratislava, the Slovak capital. It was an easy task to find tourist attractions in Bratislava the kids enjoyed.  A city rich with history, food and a castle is always a favorite with my children. Especially the food, they always want to try new foods.

Following the maze of cobblestone streets, we were at once smitten with the old world charm of this city situated along a bank of the Danube River. Impressive pastel buildings line the streets, showcasing the historical grandeur of Bratislava during the Hungarian Empire. The city was of such importance that Queen Maria Theresa of Austria ordered the city walls torn down in order to expand the capital.  They couldn’t have nobility residing outside the city walls!

Our first chore on day #1 was to schedule our FREE guided walking tour as part of the Bratislava City Card with the Bratislava Tourist Board. Our enthusiastic guide discussed the long history of Bratislava and took us to visit some of the most famous spots around Old Town.

We learned that Bratislava has been in 12 different countries over the past 100 years. At one time it was part of the Hungarian Empire, became part of Czechoslovakia after World War I, later came under Nazi control, then communist control before finally becoming the capital of the Slovak Republic in 1993.
