How I Travel (Almost) Free With Credit Card Points: Travel Hacking for Beginner’s

If you’ve never used points and miles, this guide is for you. I’ll walk you through the why, what and exactly how to start – without spreadsheets taking over your life or swiping your way into debt. You’ll see how I string together sign-up bonuses (SUB), transfer partners and perks (like airport lounges) to turn normal spending into cheap or free trips.

A few personal trips using points – Family trip to Asia in business class, only paying taxes on flights to FL and getting a free night hotel stay before ALL our cruises, NOLA mostly on points, plus booked my family to Ecuador in economy down and business class back plus several hotels – all on points!

Why Points Work – Travel Hacking for Beginner’s

Why this isn’t exactly couponing in disguise – from a former Extreme Couponer:

Points are a currency! Banks reward you with points or miles for opening a card and using it. Those points can be cashed out for things like gift cards or used to “erase” purchases, but the real value is transferring to partners redeeming for flights and hotels, where you can get 2-10¢ per point (sometimes more).

Sign-up bonuses are more valuable than everyday swipes. A single welcome bonus can cover a round-trip to Europe or a week of hotels. You don’t need a dozen cards to start – just one good card plus a plan.

Flexibility beats loyalty. I prefer flexible currency (Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR), AMEX Membership Rewards (MR), Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou Points) because I can transfer them to different airlines and hotels when I find deals. I won’t lie, it takes time and patience but the payoff is worth it!

The Three Types of Travel Rewards:

Can You Visit Las Vegas on a Budget? Tips for Affordable Travel in Sin City

March 18, 2025 by Dana Zeliff Leave a Comment

If you’re on a tight budget, there might be certain types of holidays and destinations that feel out of reach. Las Vegas is probably one of the first ones that springs to mind. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Entertainment Capital of the World can be enjoyed no matter what your budget is. You just need to know how.

This guide will give you all the insider information you need to enjoy Sin City without breaking the bank.

Finding the Right Accommodation

When you think about Las Vegas you’re probably imagining decadent casino resorts, penthouse suites, and 24/7 amenities that will cost you the earth. But did you know that there are plenty of cheap hotels in Las Vegas and other accommodation options that will fit your budget?

To make your accommodation more budget-friendly, look for hotels that are not directly on the Strip. For example, The Silver Sevens Hotel & Casino is only minutes away from this iconic street, but offers rooms from $64 per night. You can experience a taste of luxury without the expensive price tag while still being close to the action.

If your heart is set on staying on the Strip itself, you will have to pay a little more. But, there are still affordable options out there. Flamingo Las Vegas offers rooms from $90 a night, meaning you can have a quintessential Vegas experience while sticking to your budget.

If you don’t mind sharing a room, consider the Bungalows Hostel. It might not be for everyone, but it’s a great way to cut costs and even make some new friends. However, if this isn’t for you, check out vacation rentals on Airbnb. There you’ll find plenty of affordable options that could provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Top Tip: Take advantage of off-peak deals and cash in any hotel reward points you might have accumulated. This might help you upgrade your accommodation without any additional cost.

How to Manage Money in Europe: Travel Money Tips, Currency & Credit Card Advice

Updated October 2025

Are you planning a trip abroad and want to know how to manage money in Europe without wasting your hard-earned cash on hidden fees or bad exchange rates? After living in France and traveling across Europe for four years, I can safely say we’ve learned a few lessons — and made some costly mistakes. I’ve gathered all our best Europe travel money tips in one place to help you avoid the same blunders.

Let’s dive in to discover the best travel debit cards for Europe, how to avoid ATM fees, understand the local currency in each country, and even what ATMs are called throughout Europe.

How to Manage Money in Europe:

Knowing the Local Currency in Europe

Before your trip, it’s important to know what type of money you’ll be using in each country. Luckily, more than half of Europe uses the euro (€) — which makes traveling between many popular destinations much easier. No need to constantly exchange money or worry about confusing conversion rates! I’ve heard stories from my parents traveling Europe many years ago and needing a different currency in every single country. What a hassle!

That said, not every European country uses the euro. Some still rely on their own local currency, so it’s smart to double-check before you go. Using the right currency will help you get the best exchange rate and avoid paying more than necessary at shops or restaurants.

Countries That Don’t Use the Euro

Here’s a list of European countries that don’t use the euro and the currency they use instead:

  • Albania (Albanian lek)*
  • Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani manat)
  • Belarus (Belarusian ruble)
  • Bulgaria (Bulgarian lev)
  • Croatia (Croatian kuna)
  • Czech Republic (Czech koruna)
  • Denmark (Danish krone)**
  • Georgia (Georgian lari)
  • Hungary (Hungarian forint)
  • Iceland (Icelandic krona)
  • Liechtenstein (Swiss franc)
  • Macedonia (Second Macedonian denar)
  • Moldova (Moldovan leu)
  • Norway (Norwegian krone)**
  • Poland (Polish złoty)
  • Romania (Fourth Romanian leu)
  • Russia (Russian ruble)
  • Serbia (Serbian dinar)
  • Sweden (Swedish krona)
  • Switzerland (Swiss franc)
  • Turkey (Turkish lira)***
  • Ukraine (Ukrainian hryvnia)
  • United Kingdom (Pound sterling)

*Some touristic places in Albania also accept Euros, Pounds and American Dollars.
** Some tourist places in Denmark and Norway also accept Euros, but exchange rates are often poor.
*** We used Euros in Ephesus, Turkey but I don’t think the exchange rate was the greatest.

7 Money Saving Summer Vacation Tips

Money Saving Summer Vacation Tips
{Pin It}

Do you want to travel this summer without breaking the bank? I’ve put together these money saving summer vacation tips to help stretch your budget.  With some planning, deal hunting and flexibility, you can save enough money to potentially take two trips instead of just one!!

Money Saving Summer Vacation Tips:

1. Pack light – airlines are charging fees for everything nowadays. Most carries charge for checked bags and overweight bags. If you can, try to pack in a single carry on (within the size/weight restrictions) or limit everyone to a single bag.   When choosing flights consider checked bag fees into your purchase. Carriers such as Southwest offer 1 checked bag at no additional cost.

Make sure to factor in the extra space and weight of purchases you may make during your travels as well.  We like to keep a tiny reusable shopping bag with us in case we need to lighten our baggage with an extra carry on.

2. Round trip tickets – a must in travel to save money is booking round trip tickets. Booking a one- way ticket is extremely expensive, more than a round-trip ticket in a lot of cases! Don’t forget that you can book round-trip tickets arriving and departing from different airports.  Our recent trip we flew into Paris and out of Nice. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’ll be in the same area since you’d have to factor in car rentals as well.

Free Printable Travel Budget Worksheet

Travel Budget Worksheet

Sometimes the cost of travel can get away from us if we’re not prepared.  That’s why I prefer to do a quick travel budget worksheet before each trip just to help keep our spending in check.

It also helps me to know what we actually spent while on vacation.  Maybe I notice I over estimated the cost of food,  but under estimated the cost of entertainment.  Knowing the estimated and actual cost of travel can help you plan accordingly for future vacations as well.

Save the travel budget worksheet after each trip, so you can reference the cost of previous trips while planing your next adventure.  You never know, you might be able to afford more vacations that you think!

Download the Travel Budget Worksheet PDF here.   Once you download the PDF, you can either print it off or edit the document with all your budget right on the form!

What other tips can you share for creating a travel budget worksheet?
