Beat the Boredom – 12 Tips for Surviving Airport Layovers with Kids

March 3, 2022 by Dana Zeliff 4 Comments

Airport layovers, as an adult, can be boring and frustrating, but airport layovers with kids can be downright distressing.  That’s why I strive to turn our inevitable layovers into an extension of our vacation.  Being prepared, getting some rest and turning wait time into game time can help reduce the stress.

Because the reality is that you will, at some point, experience layovers. Flights with layovers tend to be much cheaper than direct flights.  Sometimes it’s just not possible to get a direct flight between destinations.  Other times circumstances beyond our control, such as weather or aircraft delays, result in more time than expected hanging around the terminal.

Luckily, this does get a bit easier as kids get older.  At least they no longer need constant attention.  But being hungry, tired and bored can amplify emotion in an already moody teen.

Don’t land stressed and frustrated!  Gone are the days of sitting around at the gate twiddling your thumbs trying to keep the kids calm.  Here’s our 12 suggestions for surviving airport layovers with kids:

Know Your Gate Location:

We like to find our gate right away, so we know where the aircraft will be located.   I don’t want any surprises when it’s time to board.  I can’t count the number of airports we’ve been in where it takes 30+ minutes to get from one side or terminal to another.  Recently, I swear we walked for 15 minutes down a never ending corridor before we even saw the first gate number.

Find a Deserted Gate

However, instead of waiting at our gate, I like to hunt down an empty gate.  You might find these closer to the end of the terminal.  Here, kids can be a little louder and more active without disturbing other flyers.  If kids are little, they can run around the chairs to get some of their energy out, spin in circles or have a mini dance party.

Market Shopping in Nice – Cours Saleya Flower Market & Liberation Market Nice, France

Guide to Fresh Market Shopping in Nice, France

One thing I love about living in Nice (and traveling through Europe) is being able to shop at the fresh markets. While fresh markets have become more popular in the US, it’s not as common or seen as a daily way to shop as it is on this side of the Atlantic. Maybe the size of the refrigerators has something to do with it…

At some point during your travels in Nice, France you should make time to visit the markets. Two of the most popular markets are Cours Saleya Flower Market & Liberation Market Nice.  Most visitors will end up in Old Town or Vieux Nice, but that’s not the only place to shop. Niçoise markets are colorful and lively, and shouldn’t be missed while on the Côte d’Azur.

6am – 12:30
Closed Monday
Directions – Take the tram from Vieux Nice in direction – Henri Sappia and exit at Libération stop

Shop with the locals at the largest fresh market in Nice!  This hidden gem is off the beaten tourist route, but well worth the visit, especially on the weekends when the market is overflowing with vendors.   Everyone seems to know each other, stopping in the streets for a quick chat before strolling off to bump into another friend or neighbor.   I overheard an animated conversation between a woman and one of the vendors as he explained to her the best way to choose citron or lemons.  I loved how, even though the vendor was busy, he took the time to help the woman pick just the right lemons instead of just throwing a few in a bag and moving her along, my, up to now, preferred method!

At the Liberation Market you will hear almost exclusively French, but don’t let that deter you.  Shopping with the locals is the best way to experience the real Niçoise way of life.

7 Money Saving Summer Vacation Tips

Money Saving Summer Vacation Tips
{Pin It}

Do you want to travel this summer without breaking the bank? I’ve put together these money saving summer vacation tips to help stretch your budget.  With some planning, deal hunting and flexibility, you can save enough money to potentially take two trips instead of just one!!

Money Saving Summer Vacation Tips:

1. Pack light – airlines are charging fees for everything nowadays. Most carries charge for checked bags and overweight bags. If you can, try to pack in a single carry on (within the size/weight restrictions) or limit everyone to a single bag.   When choosing flights consider checked bag fees into your purchase. Carriers such as Southwest offer 1 checked bag at no additional cost.

Make sure to factor in the extra space and weight of purchases you may make during your travels as well.  We like to keep a tiny reusable shopping bag with us in case we need to lighten our baggage with an extra carry on.

2. Round trip tickets – a must in travel to save money is booking round trip tickets. Booking a one- way ticket is extremely expensive, more than a round-trip ticket in a lot of cases! Don’t forget that you can book round-trip tickets arriving and departing from different airports.  Our recent trip we flew into Paris and out of Nice. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’ll be in the same area since you’d have to factor in car rentals as well.

8 Simple Tips to Plan a Road Trip, Stay On Budget & Create Lasting Memories

January 20, 2021 by Dana Zeliff 12 Comments

Plan Road Trip

We’ve been taking more and more road trips both in the United States and in Europe.   They are great for week long trips and quick weekend getaways.   Road trips can also be a relatively inexpensive way to travel compared to purchasing plane or train tickets for a family.    But in order to squeeze every penny out of your travel budget, it’s best to plan ahead.   That way you can pack smart to save money, time and sanity.  Clean out the junk, pack snacks and don’t forget the map!

Road tripping is not only a fun way for families to travel, but it also allows us to see places that we might have otherwise only seen from the air.  Take advantage of interesting stops along the way,  play games with the kids and enjoy the extra time together as a family.  To help you plan for your next adventure on the road, we’ve put together 8 simple tips to get you started.

Plan Road Trip with 8 Simple Tips:

1.  Clean out the junk:  Before heading out on a road trip; clear out the trash, extra toys and junk from the trunk and backseat.  Not only will it make fitting in your travel gear easier, you’ll save money by not weighing down your vehicle with with unnecessary stuff!

2.  Give the car a check-up:  Make sure your tires have correct pressure, filters have been changed, and fluids are topped off.  A well maintained vehicle can help stretch a few more miles out of that tank of gas.  While you’re at it, grab a bucket of soap and water to start your trip off squeaky clean.

3.  Pack drinks and snacks:  Purchase bottled water, juice boxes, or sodas at the grocery store.   Keep a cooler handy for a few drinks during the trip and the rest can stay in the back to swap out later.

Bring snacks that are easy to munch on such as pretzels or carrot sticks to keep the driver and passengers happy.  Also, consider packing a few special treats for the kids if they start getting moody. My kids rarely get fruit snacks, so getting that special snack sure puts a smile on their faces!
