We made our first trip to the American Girl store in Washington, DC for LuLu’s birthday.  It was an awesome experience for the entire family. LuLu (and I) were in awe of the massive American Girl Tysons Corner store. Dolls and accessories were everywhere!!

Our first stop was to the Doll Salon. We set up an appointment, picked a style, then headed off to shop.    If you’re visiting the salon or getting ears pierced, make sure you set that up as your first thing to do as there can be a long wait time.

American Girl Tysons Corner Store - Just Like Me

The American Girl Tysons Corner store is set up on 2 levels. The first has a large checkout counter, the doll salon where you can also get ears pierced and also an area to have your doll treated at the hospital. There is a spot to get custom t-shirts made for girls and their dolls,  as well as a large section of bitty baby dolls, clothes and accessories. You’ll find the “Just Like Me Dolls” with their clothing and accessories on the first floor as well.  Ask your Mom if you can get the clothes that matches your dolls outfit. They are so cool!

Take the elevator or escalator upstairs to find the cafe and huge displays of each doll with her friends and home accessories.  It’s pretty cool seeing the sets together – even I wanted to buy something!

We walked around and around the store while LuLu attempted to stay within her budget. She’d pick an item up but then find something different she liked better.  I can’t even count the number of times we added up her purchases just to have her find something else 🙂

After LuLu made her purchase (an hour later), it was time to head back to the salon. Caroline was in desperate need of a new hairdo. Her curls were getting unruly. The dolls sit in a cute mini salon chair with a doll sized apron.  The stylist was efficient and had the style of the month done in no time. She even took the time to show LuLu how to curl Caroline’s hair.

One thing we should have done was to plan to arrive earlier in the day.  There are a lot of fun free events offered, but we couldn’t make the drive up in time.   I also suggest keeping in mind that American Girl Dolls are extremely expensive.  This is definitely not a store to expect to save money.  Make sure to set a budget for your child in advance.  You can always send a spouse back to the store later while you occupy your child so that they can  grab a couple more items to put way for birthdays or Christmas.

Next up I’ll share all about our experience with American Girl Food and the Bistro Birthday Celebration!
