While the French Riviera might conjure up images of celebrities at the Cannes Film Festival and cars zooming around the streets during the Monaco Grand Prix,  the South of France is still a great destination for families. But what do you do with kids when you visit France’s Southern coast?   I suggest making Nice your home base.  You can easily visit much of the Cote d’Azur from Nice using public transport.  Flights arrive from all over the world into the Nice Airport, so it makes sense that your first stop is Nice.

It’s always a good time to visit the South of France.  Nice has 300 days of sunshine a year after all!  My favorite times are the Spring and Fall, but you can find family-friendly activities all year round.   Read on for a locals perspective on what to do in Nice, France with kids.

Since it is likely that most of my American friends don’t speak French, I’ve tried to only include activities that kids can participate in, despite that language barrier.

Hit the Beach

One of the nicest things to do in Nice with kids is a trip to the beach.  If you’re lucky enough to visit during the warmer months, you could plan an entire day around the shore. I know many older kids would be perfectly happy to lounge around by the sea all day listening to music, posting TikTok videos and texting with friends.

Younger kids can throw rocks in the water, collect sea glass or simply take a break and enjoy a snack by the sea.  If it’s a sunny day, take a swim.  It’s not uncommon for kids to strip down to their underwear and dive in, not that I recommend this over swimming trunks 🙂

You’ll find both public and private beaches in Nice.  For a fee, you can take advantage of a lounge chair, umbrella and drink service.  We find that the public beaches meet our needs, so that’s where we take our kids. During the summer, you’ll find lifeguard stations at various points to help provide an extra pair of eyes while you’re little ones enjoy the sea.

Village de Noël Nice, France

It’s that magical time of year.  Snow is falling, fires are blazing and Santa Clause is at the mall.   Okay, maybe not in the South of France, but Christmas is definitely in the air.    We have chilly mornings, hot chocolate, Christmas lights strung throughout the town and Père Noël peeking out of storefront windows.

What better place to celebrate the holiday season than on the French Riviera at the Village de Noël or Christmas Village in Nice, France!  Experience the delight of handcrafted gifts, delicious food and play area for kids and kids at heart while visiting Nice over the holiday’s.

The fun starts in Place Massena, where you can’t miss the towering Ferris Wheel (Grande Roue).  The large skating rink (patinoire) beckons beginners and experienced skaters for five daily sessions of 1.5 hours each. Find a Christmas tree bucket ride, food and wine chalets with seating area and a decorated area with a ski lift seat for a cute photo opportunity.

Market Shopping in Nice – Cours Saleya Flower Market & Liberation Market Nice, France

Guide to Fresh Market Shopping in Nice, France

One thing I love about living in Nice (and traveling through Europe) is being able to shop at the fresh markets. While fresh markets have become more popular in the US, it’s not as common or seen as a daily way to shop as it is on this side of the Atlantic. Maybe the size of the refrigerators has something to do with it…

At some point during your travels in Nice, France you should make time to visit the markets. Two of the most popular markets are Cours Saleya Flower Market & Liberation Market Nice.  Most visitors will end up in Old Town or Vieux Nice, but that’s not the only place to shop. Niçoise markets are colorful and lively, and shouldn’t be missed while on the Côte d’Azur.

6am – 12:30
Closed Monday
Directions – Take the tram from Vieux Nice in direction – Henri Sappia and exit at Libération stop

Shop with the locals at the largest fresh market in Nice!  This hidden gem is off the beaten tourist route, but well worth the visit, especially on the weekends when the market is overflowing with vendors.   Everyone seems to know each other, stopping in the streets for a quick chat before strolling off to bump into another friend or neighbor.   I overheard an animated conversation between a woman and one of the vendors as he explained to her the best way to choose citron or lemons.  I loved how, even though the vendor was busy, he took the time to help the woman pick just the right lemons instead of just throwing a few in a bag and moving her along, my, up to now, preferred method!

At the Liberation Market you will hear almost exclusively French, but don’t let that deter you.  Shopping with the locals is the best way to experience the real Niçoise way of life.

Christmas in Nice – Provençal Christmas Traditions

Christmas in Nice - Provençal Christmas Traditions

Missing France……

Celebrating Christmas in Nice is similar to celebrating in the United States. The sprit of the season is all about family and traditions.

How We Celebrated Christmas in Nice

Holiday decorations at the grocery store

Although it may not have met our abnormally sophisticated expectations, there was some level of holiday decorating throughout  Old Town Nice and some decorations on apartment balconies. The most popular outdoor decoration was a climbing Santa which seemed to be present on 4 out of every 5 apartments.  Old Town and the main squares were decked out with a fair amount of lights and other decorations.  But we did miss being in the US and seeing all the houses lit up as if in a competition.   It was our little tradition to drive around trying to find the gaudiest light displays or to take walks in the evening to see which of our neighbors put out the tackiest Santa.

Celebrating Thanksgiving in France – Sharing an American Holiday with French Friends

Celebrating Thanksgiving in France

A look back at Thanksgiving 2015!  While we missed family, it was a fantastic day with friends!

This Thanksgiving was the first time we haven’t been home in the US to celebrate. Celebrating Thanksgiving in France was an educational experience, a little bit sad, and, as it turned out, a lot of work!!

Since we didn’t have family to celebrate with this year, we planned a big Thanksgiving dinner with another American family.  It was nice to have others that understood the tradition and to help share some of the cooking-particularly since, stateside, I was always given pie making duty.  No one was ever crazy enough to assign me anything more difficult.

What started out as a small(ish) celebration with just two American families, turned into a massive sixteen person extravaganza.   In terms of our usual Thanksgiving gathering, sixteen is still small, but we could only fit so many people inside a tiny French apartment.

As it turns out, the French (or those that we know well) are fascinated with the idea of Thanksgiving. What we see as a normal holiday, the French see as an intriguing American tradition.   I guess you can’t get more American than celebrating pilgrims, indians, stuffing ourselves with food, watching football and giving thanks for our blessings.
