Entertaining kids when traveling has completely changed from the time I used to take vacations with my parents. All my kids want to do nowadays is play on their electronics with earbuds in while listening to music. Sound familiar? When traveling with teens and tweens, I’ve found it easier to engage their love of all things digital and incorporate that into our travel time.

The Perfect Florence, Italy Holiday with Kids

Family Travel Florence

From the very first glance, Florence lay claim to the title of “my favorite European city”. It might actually be my favorite city – period.  While the Renaissance city may not seem like an ideal family destination, kids will be awed by the art, architecture, gardens and food.  And it’s no wonder, Florence is simply magical- the light casting a warm golden glow on the decorative buildings, the tantalizing smell of traditional Tuscan cuisine wafting through the air and the laughter of children as they romp about the square.  It all sets the stage for a fabulous Florence, Italy holiday with kids.

When visiting a destination such a Florence, with kids in tow, it’s particularly important to not jet off on a whirlwind cultural tour of the city. Plan a slower paced experience mixing in cultural, kid-friendly attractions with plenty of downtime to roam unhurried.  Even include unexpected stops for pizza and the ever important gelato!

Our family-friendly Florence itinerary should provide a wide range of options for kids of all ages.  Chat about the vast history and have kids point out interesting things they see.

How to Budget for International Travel

When you know how to budget international travel, you’ll save so much money that you could plan a second vacation!   There are a lot of things that are different overseas than in the United States. Being prepared for them means you don’t waste money or have to replace things that you may have brought with you.  We’ve listed our top tips for currency, electronics, shopping and when to go, so you can spend more time enjoying your vacation and less time worrying about the cost.

How to Budget International Travel:

Wait to Get Cash Abroad: When you go to another country, you’ll need to use their currency. While you can use a credit card for most puchases, there are times when cash is a necessity. Simple things like taking a cab from the airport, purchasing fresh produce from the market or tipping your tour guide require that you have cash on hand.

What Foreign Kids Need Instead of a French Residence Card (How To Get a DCEM)

June 4, 2017 by Dana Zeliff 59 Comments

UPDATE: You can now apply online.  If anyone has current experience getting the DCEM, please share.

*This doesn’t apply to citizens of the EU or UK as far as I know*

Did you know that expat children in France need to apply for a DCEM or Document de Circulation Pour Étranger Mineur? I didn’t!

After our first year in France, it was time to renew our Visa’s.   Since you don’t actually get a new Visa, instead a Carte de Séjour,  that poses a bit of a problem for kids. Only adults get a fancy residents card. So what about the kids? According the lady at the Préfecture,  the kids didn’t need anything since they are residing here with their parents.   We thought that was cool and went about our lives.

Fast forward to us trying to enter the Netherlands after a vacation in Ireland. Apparently, kids DO need paperwork saying they can come back into the EU.  Thankfully, we weren’t given too much of a hard time.  The customs officials just instructed us to get the kids documentation.
