Market Shopping in Nice – Cours Saleya Flower Market & Liberation Market Nice, France

Guide to Fresh Market Shopping in Nice, France

One thing I love about living in Nice (and traveling through Europe) is being able to shop at the fresh markets. While fresh markets have become more popular in the US, it’s not as common or seen as a daily way to shop as it is on this side of the Atlantic. Maybe the size of the refrigerators has something to do with it…

At some point during your travels in Nice, France you should make time to visit the markets. Two of the most popular markets are Cours Saleya Flower Market & Liberation Market Nice.  Most visitors will end up in Old Town or Vieux Nice, but that’s not the only place to shop. Niçoise markets are colorful and lively, and shouldn’t be missed while on the Côte d’Azur.

:: Liberation Market Nice – Marché de la Liberation Nice
6am – 12:30
Closed Monday
Directions – Take the tram from Vieux Nice in direction – Henri Sappia and exit at Libération stop

Shop with the locals at the largest fresh market in Nice!  This hidden gem is off the beaten tourist route, but well worth the visit, especially on the weekends when the market is overflowing with vendors.   Everyone seems to know each other, stopping in the streets for a quick chat before strolling off to bump into another friend or neighbor.   I overheard an animated conversation between a woman and one of the vendors as he explained to her the best way to choose citron or lemons.  I loved how, even though the vendor was busy, he took the time to help the woman pick just the right lemons instead of just throwing a few in a bag and moving her along, my, up to now, preferred method!

At the Liberation Market you will hear almost exclusively French, but don’t let that deter you.  Shopping with the locals is the best way to experience the real Niçoise way of life.

MARYLAND Bucket List

Maryland isn’t just crabs, square pizza, and Old Bay seasoning! Let’s talk about some of the best “off the beaten path” places you should add to your Maryland Bucket List.

Maryland Bucket List

Are you the outdoorsy type? Maryland has no shortage of breathtaking scenery, hikes that range in difficulty from beginner to advanced, and of course several waterfront views that are second to none.

The Great Outdoors

Billy Goat Trail – If you love the outdoors, you won’t want to miss Billy Goat Trail. The entire park is absolutely gorgeous, with lots of activities for folks of all ages. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Adkins Arboretum – Nestled on 400 acres of wetlands and gardens, a visit to Adkins Arboretum almost feels like you’re stepping onto another continent. This natural preserve is one of Maryland’s best kept secrets. If you’re looking for a serene place to relax and enjoy connecting with nature, this is it. My favorite part are the waterfront views… another destination you want to make sure you bring your camera for!

Historic Forts to Visit in Florida

Historic Forts to Visit in Florida

Florida is home to the first Spanish established colonial settlement in the United States.  A big part of that establishment are the military forts that were built to offer protection and shelter.

Historic forts in Florida also happen to be among some of the best preserved forts located in the United States. If you are planning a Florida vacation, these landmarks are worth a visit because of the significance they played in establishing this country and in the development of the local communities where they exist.

The following are some of the historic forts to visit in Florida. Each offers a unique look at an important point in the history of the state.

Fort Christmas, Fort Christmas Historical Park

Fort Christmas was founded on Christmas day in 1837, and built to offer protection and shelter during the intense Seminole Indian War. The existing fort houses exhibits and artifacts from that period, 1870-1930,  give guests an idea of what life was like during its occupation. Each month features a festival or reenactment where visitors can take a step back into history and explore the several historical homes that make up the park. Because the fort was built from timber, it is important to remember that it is a replica, but even this replica of a historical fort is worth your time because of the significant role it played in the wars fought to gain control over the region.

Castillo De San Marcos, St. Augustine

St. Augustine holds the title as the oldest city in the United States, being settled by the Spanish conquistadors nearly 450 years ago. The Castillo De San Marcos is the town’s historic fort, a relic that is still standing today. While you could easily spend an entire weekend vacation exploring St. Augustine, a visit to the fort can be seen in a couple of hours. Daily weapon demonstrations and reenactments that cover the daily life and military training that took place in the fort are performed. A Park Ranger program gives you a peek into more detailed daily activities of the fort with a wide variety of subjects that will interest serious history buffs and capture the curiosity of children.

Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas National Park

Located in the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off the coast of Key West, the Dry Tortugas National Park consists of seven small islands and one holds Fort Jefferson. The fort was built to serve and protect the waters around the Gulf of Mexico and provide a strategic naval outpost for the country. Construction on Fort Jefferson started in 1846 and lasted over 30 years, but ultimately it was never fully completed. To get to the National Park and Fort, guests need to arrange for travel on a public ferry, or get there via seaplane or private boat. Because of its remote location and transportation limitations, make sure you plan well ahead of time and are able to carry with you everything you will need for a day spent at this historic, but very remote, location.

Once there take a guided tour of historic Fort Jefferson and then take an even longer self guided tour to explore all the nooks and crannies, where you can get some incredible views of other parts of the fort and island. If you plan on making a day of it, be sure to pack swim gear and a snorkel.  You can also camp, take a hike or even rent a kayak.

These 3 historic forts to visit in Florida can easily be fit into your travel schedule.  Take a couple of hours and immerse yourself in history.

Family Hotels in Costa Brava, Spain

The Costa Brava area of Spain is the perfect choice for families with countless family-friendly accommodations to satisfy all travelers and budgets.  We stayed in three different villages during our recent travels.  Below is a peek at our lodgings and why they are excellent options for families.

Camping Costa Brava in Plaja d’Aro – Valldaro

Valldaro moble home

Valldaro game room

Valldaro is family run and feels more like a little village than your typical campground. In addition to a place to rest your head, you can find 3 swimming pools, 2 supermarkets, a laundry mat, 2 restaurants,  a hair salon and a game room.  There’s even a Zen center to relax and enjoy a massage, waxing or other spa services.

There are numerous  accommodation options at Valldaro. You can pitch a tent, hook up your RV, rent a bungalow or mobile home  or choose to stay in one of the new Fun Tents.  There are many families that return year after year, leaving their RV set up,  waiting for their next vacation on Spain’s sunny coast.

North Carolina Bucket List

From exploring marshlands to adventuring into white water rafting, North Carolina truly has a little bit of everything for everyone!  If you’re planning a visit, browse through our North Carolina Bucket List to find your next adventure in The Tar Heel State.

Living on the southern border of Virginia, I’ve spent countless vacations in North Carolina.  I hope you enjoy your time in NC as much as I do.

North Carolina Bucket List

The Great Outdoors

Mingo Falls – Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Mingo Falls is nestled on a land trust of the Cherokee Indians. The hike to the waterfall is less than a half mile each way, and is only moderately difficult, making it fun for the whole family. Wear your good hiking shoes, and don’t forget your camera!

Lighthouses – There are many lighthouses to see in North Carolina. Ocracoke Lighthouse is located on Ocracoke Island, accessible by ferry from Hatteras. It’s the state’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. Old Baldy is another lighthouse worth visiting. Visible from Oak Island if you just want a glance, or take a ferry to Bald Head Island and climb the 108 steps to the top of Old Baldy for the best views around.

Gem Mining – Franklin is known as the gem capital of the world. Because of that, gem mining is the major attraction in this town. Gem mining is fun for kids and adults alike, and there are several spots you can enjoy gem mining. Most mines have you pay an admission fee for the day, and they sell gem dirt in a bucket to dig through. Bring ziploc bags or some tupperware to take your stones home. Wear old clothes, because you’ll probably get dirty!
