25 Essential Things to Know Before Visiting Thailand: A First-Time Traveler’s Guide

Thailand is known as The Land of Smiles and it doesn’t take long to see why. The country is a dazzling mix of ancient temples, bustling markets, turquoise seas, friendly locals and food that will have you wishing there was room in your belly for seconds – it’s that good!

Whether you’re wandering through Bangkok’s colorful chaos, relaxing on a beach in Phuket or exploring the quiet charm of Chiang Mai, Thailand manages to feel both exotic and welcoming.

If it’s your first time in the country, here are 25 things to know before visiting Thailand. I’ve included a mix of practical tips and cultural insights to help you make the most of your trip.  Just be prepared, if may be your first time in Thailand, but you’ll already have the next visit planned before you’ve even gotten on the flight back home.

Things to Know Before Visiting Thailand

Before You Go

1. You’ll Be Greeted with a Smile and a “Wai”

Thai people are famously warm and polite. A common greeting is the wai – palms pressed together in a prayer-like gesture with a small bow. While it may feel unfamiliar at first to return the greeting, you’ll quickly find yourself returning it without thinking.

Tip: The higher your hands are placed (closer to your face), the more respect you’re showing.

2. Download Grab & Bolt Before You Land

Grab & Bolt (Thailand’s version of Uber & Lyft) is the easiest way to book reliable transport in cities. It helps you avoid haggling and guarantees fair pricing. We tend to use Grab more frequently but Bolt is another great option. The app just didn’t like my credit cards, so we used this option more when needing to spend the rest of our cash.

10 Things to Do in Fredericksburg, VA: A Local Travel Guide

If you’re planning a trip to Virginia, you’ll want to add Fredericksburg to your itinerary. Nestled halfway between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, this charming city is bursting with history, local flavor, and small-town Southern charm. From battlefields and cobblestone streets to vibrant food spots and river adventures, there’s something here for everyone. As a mom of a UMW student, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the city and can’t wait to share all that Fredericksburg has to offer.

In this travel guide, I’m sharing my favorite 10 things to do in Fredericksburg, VA (FXBG) so you can make the most of your visit to this historic gem.

10 Things to do in Fredericksburg, VA

1. Walk Through Historic Downtown Fredericksburg

Start your exploration in the heart of the city. Historic Downtown Fredericksburg is full of 18th- and 19th-century architecture, vintage shops, and locally owned restaurants. Stroll along Caroline Street, grab a coffee, and take in the history. The oldest surviving building dates back to 1737!

Tip: Stop by Possum-Bilities for cute gifts, local artwork and all things opossum. You’ll likely get the meet one of the rescued Virginia opossums!

What to Wear on an Alaska Cruise: Printable Packing List

June 29, 2025 by Dana Zeliff 8 Comments

Planning an Alaska cruise but not sure what to wear? I spent a lot of time researching packing for an Alaska cruise prior to our trip and paid special attention to other cruisers attire while onboard and in port. I probably looked like a crazy stalker, staring at people and making notes on my phone 🙂

Weather in Alaska can change drastically during the day and even hour by the hour. Our driver from Anchorage to Seward told us that in Alaska you can wait 10 minutes or drive 10 miles and the weather will change – and not necessarily for the better! We definitely discovered this on our trip. One minute it was sunny, and we were wearing short sleeves & getting a little warm while the next the wind started to blow, and we added layers and pulled our hoods up.

The month you travel will also affect your packing, to a degree. The Alaska cruise season is May-September. If traveling during the first or last month, expect cooler temperatures. August will be nice and warm, but it is what’s considered the start of the rainy season. We traveled the first week of June. The weather was lovely with only a little rain. We were told the week prior was cold and rainy while the week before that saw snow!

The key to dressing in Alaska is layers. I’ll start our Alaska cruise packing list discussing what to wear at port/on excursions.  You’ll also want to consider your plans for pre and post cruise as this can affect your outdoor clothing as well. You may need to pack a little differently for land tours. For example, Fairbanks can get hotter than you’d expect in the summer, so you’ll want those tanks and shorts.

Pictures from the Road – Easy Guide to Understanding French Road Signs

May 15, 2025 by Dana Zeliff 19 Comments

Driving in France can be challenging, especially if you can’t read French.  The thought of getting in the car and navigating roads at 60+ mph in a foreign country can be scary.  But really, it’s pretty much the same as driving in the U.S.A. and most other countries.  The exception being the UK, as they drive on the wrong side of the road 😉  French road signs are pretty straightforward and use a lot of universal symbols.  However, it is important to know what those signs mean and how you should interpret them.  This guide will help you travel safely and successfully in France.

On our recent road trip, I took pictures of signs we passed on both the interstate and local roads.  A few times I had to have the kids translate a word or two for me.  It’s so nice to travel with kids that are pretty much fluent in the language!  But first, lets look at some key vocabulary.

French Vocab.

Travaux = works (ie. road work)
Attention = attention
Ouvert = open
Fermé = closed
Rappel = reminder (you’ll see this under the speed limit signs as a reminder to the speed limit. It’s a reminder to you that you are still in that speed zone – not that it has changed)
Prochaine sortie = next exit
Sortie = exit
Péage – toll road
Sauf = except
Cédez le passage = yield or give way
Toutes directions = all directions
Route barre = road closed
Sens unique = one-way
Suivre = follow
Arrêt = stop
Serrez à droite = keep to the right
Allumez vos feux = Turn on your lights
Aire de XX = rest stop of X town
Gendarmerie = police station
Rue = street

Guide to French Road Signs

It is also important to note that in France there is priorité à droite or the right-of-way is to cars entering from the right. This is always the case unless you have a sign with a yellow triangle giving you priority. While you won’t really find people merging into your lane as if you weren’t there as they enter the highway, they do have the right of way.   If there is an accident, you are at fault.  This is opposite of in the U.S., where priority is given to those already on the highway.
