How to Avoid Discomfort on Your Long Haul Flight

I don’t think there is anyone on earth who enjoys a long haul flight! However, if we want to enjoy these far-flung destinations then there is very little we can do to avoid them! Whilst many airlines nowadays do as much as they can to make these flights bearable with in-flight entertainment and free refreshments, they can still be somewhat uncomfortable.

Here are a few ways to make your next long haul flight a little more comfortable.

Invest in blue light blocking glasses

One of the most common things to do on a long haul flight is to either use the in-flight entertainment or use a mobile or tablet device to watch your favourite shows. Couple this with the dark lighting of the cabin and you are likely to give yourself extremely sore and tired eyes. Blue light which is emitted by the screens will trick your brain into thinking that it is daytime, so can also play havoc with your sleeping pattern.

Dress properly

It is worth remembering that a flight isn’t a fashion show! Despite the fact that you’ll want to touch down in clothing suitable for your destination, it’s much better to dress specifically for the flight instead.

Firstly, comfortable trousers such as jogging bottoms are a must, as these will allow you to feel much more relaxed in comparison to restricting jeans. For your top half, go for soft, breathable clothing with optional layers so that you can de-layer and re-layer as the temperature changes. Make sure to pack a pair of warm socks too as your feet can get extremely cold whilst in the air.

If you do want a specific set of clothes to land in, pack them in your hand luggage and do a quick change just before descent.

Keep yourself hydrated

Although the allure of a free bar can be a difficult one to resist, it is so important to ensure that you maintain a good water intake throughout the flight. Air inside aeroplane cabins is generally quite dry and humidity levels are dry, meaning that you get uncomfortable itchy and dry, so make sure that you are still taking on a good amount of water throughout.

Pack headphones

On a long flight, that crying baby or annoying chatterbox two rows back is 100 times more annoying than it would be down on land, so make sure that you pack a good set of headphones or earphones to help you stay sane. Make sure you pre-load your phone or tablet with films and music you like, as the in-flight entertainment isn’t always to everybody’s taste!
