How to Pick the Perfect Cruise Staterooms for Your Next Holiday

April 9, 2017 by Dana Zeliff 2 Comments

There are many decisions to make when selecting a cruise-which cruise line should you sail with, where do you want to go, how long of a cruise will you take, what are the best cruise staterooms for your holiday?  Not all cruise lines have the same amenities and destinations and not all staterooms (or cabins) are created equal.

Your cruise stateroom is a floating hotel room , a hotel room where you spend a fair amount of time as you progress from port to port.  It’s considerably smaller, but offers similar features such as daily cleaning, turn down service and room service.  Just as when determining which hotel room level suits you during your land travels, you’ll need to pick from multiple cruise stateroom options. So, how do you decide?   We’ve put together a few tips to help you pick the perfect cruise staterooms for you and your family.

1. Determine your budget – Stateroom categories vary by price, so,  before you pick, you’ll need to decide how much you can afford to spend.  I suggest putting together a budget and researching prices before you make final plans.  Factor in the price of the cruise, accommodation and meals before and after your cruise (if applicable), transportation to the ship (flights, gas & parking fees, train tickets), beverages, excursions and gratuities.

Also, look for cruise deals before making your purchase.  You might find our Caribbean cruise money saving tips article to be helpful to keep more money in your pocket.

You may be able to get a free onboard credit, free drink package or kids sail free offer.  Don’t forget to look at what amenities are available with upgrades.  You might find that the added perks of one stateroom over another will level out the expenses.

Our travel budget planner might be a helpful tool for recording the numbers.

Heidelberg Castle Germany – Surviving Lightening Strikes, Fires, Pillage and Wars Since 1214

One of the first things we research when deciding what to see during our travels, is whether or not castles and palaces are nearby that we can visit. We love the rich history of these structures and the beauty they present- even when in disrepair.   The hilltop landmark of Heidelberg, Heidelberg Castle or Heidelberger Schloss, is no exception. Heidelberg Castle, Germany is said to be among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. The red sandstone ruins tower over the Neckar valley and standout against a beautiful backdrop of deep green forests.

Plan at least a day to explore Heidelberg and it’s many attractions. When visiting, it’s worthwhile to not only take a guided tour of the castle, but to visit the gardens, see the huge wine barrel, explore the apothecary museum and take a ride on the funicular railway.  And that’s all before visiting the town itself!

Mark Twain described Heidelberg Castle in his 1880 travel book A Tramp Abroad saying:

“A ruin must be rightly situated, to be effective. This one could not have been better placed. It stands upon a commanding elevation, it is buried in green woods, there is no level ground about it, but, on the contrary, there are wooded terraces upon terraces, and one looks down through shining leaves into profound chasms and abysses where twilight reigns and the sun cannot intrude.”

It was so well placed that the earliest castle structure, built in the early 1200’s, was later expanded into two castles. As the home to the King of Germany in 1401, expansion became a necessity. Not only was additional space needed  his for court and entourage, but so were additional defenses. In the end, it was no longer a castle, but a fortress.

What You Need to Know About the MSC Magnifica Cruise Ship Plus European Itinerary

March 20, 2017 by Dana Zeliff 5 Comments

You’ve booked a cruise, but want to know a bit more about the MSC Magnifica cruise ship before you sail off on the high seas? We’ve got that info for you!! We came back from an 11 night cruise on the MSC Magnifica a few weeks ago.   It was a fun trip and we learned a ton of information about the ship.  We’ll break down some of the data, so you’ll be prepared for your sailing.

The MSC Magnifica cruise ship is a Musica-class ship. It was the 4th and final ship of this class.  The ship was nice ,but a bit worn, having been in service since 2010.  It helped that the crew did a good job of keeping it clean.  The ship carries just over 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew.   This is not a Mega ship, but still had plenty of amenities to keep my kids entertained and it was a good size for cruising around Europe.

We were lucky during our sailing as the ship wasn’t at full capacity.  There was plenty of space to get away from the crowds and relax with a drink as we glided across the sea.

Staff –

Most of the staff were friendly & great with the kids. We had read reviews of extremely rude staff, but for the most part, we didn’t find this to be the case.  That’s not to say we didn’t come across some rude crew members, it just means that most were friendly, considerate and tried to make our cruise pleasurable.

Our room steward and waiters at dinner were especially great.  Our room steward was on top of things.  Most mornings we left the room for breakfast and returned an hour later to find the room already cleaned.  We didn’t get towel animals, but I’ll take  a clean room and fresh towels over lame towel animal art any day.
