The Beginners Guide to Vacation Planning – 15 Step Travel Planning Guide

The Beginners Guide to Vacation Planning

You’re ready to start planning your next vacation, but don’t know where to begin. We put together the beginners guide to vacation planning in answer to several emailed questions about this topic. This 15 step travel planning guide will hopefully put you on the path to traveling more frequently.

First, you need to decide WHERE you want to travel.  You need to give yourself a goal, something to make the trip real. Saying you want to travel more  is great, but you need to know where you want to travel to.  Deciding “I’m going to South America” or “I’m going to London” is going to get the ball rolling faster.

But deciding where to go isn’t always an easy task.  There are so many places in the world that deciding on just one destination can be tough.  It can be overwhelming and some of you may not even know how to begin picking a destination. Read on for my tips to get you headed in the right direction.

15 Step Travel Planning Guide:

1.  Deciding when to travel –  When to travel can be one of the most important travel factors.  If you are limited to traveling during certain times of the year due to school or work, you’re likely going to be traveling during peak season.  I recommend traveling during the off season, but that’s not always possible.  If your job only allows you to take vacation time during the summer, try to plan for early June before kids get out of school.  This will make travel cheaper and less crowded.

If you’re traveling around Christmas, the best days to fly are usually on Christmas or New Year’s Day or the days immediately preceding and following those dates.   Being even slightly flexible with your travel dates can save a ton of money on transportation and accommodation plus allow you to enjoy popular tourist attractions with shorter wait times and less crowds.

2.  What’s the weather? – Once you know when you can travel, you need to decide what type of climate you’re looking to enjoy on your vacation.  Is it hot and you’re looking to cool off at a Northern retreat?  Do you want to get away bfrom the snow and jet off to the beach?  Figure out what type of weather you’re looking forward to in order to help narrow down your travel destination choices.  This can go hand-in-hand with deciding when to travel as well.

Guide to Picking the Best Cruise for Your Family

Not all cruises are the same. An uncontroversial statement, sure, but for non-cruisers it might be hard to understand quite how many options there are to choose from when it comes to picking the right cruise for you and can certainly become overwhelming. Whether you are looking for the best weekend cruises or the top 3-week voyages, a Caribbean adventure on the high seas, or sail up the Norwegian fjords, cruising options are almost limitless. Read on for a few hints and tips on choosing your perfect cruise vacation.

Know your budget

Setting your budget will help narrow down your options considerably. As a general rule, smaller boats are more expensive, and obviously the higher the budget the more luxury you can expect. Features, perks, and amenities all often come with a cost, so working out what you can afford is a good starting point. It might also help to have a list of must haves and nice to haves when determining what you might splurge on and what you might save on. For example you might care more about your cabin and want one with a view or you might want to save that cash and spend it on an excursion or two.

Ideas to Travel Close to Home: Staycation Tips for Traveling in Your Own Backyard

Saying travel hasn’t been easy in 2020 is an understatement. Most of us have faced cancelled vacations this year and aren’t even sure when we’ll be able to travel freely again. If you’re like my family, you still have that travel bug. While staying safe and healthy is a top priority, there are still ways to get out there and travel. It just may not be what you imagined when you last planned trips back in 2019. Staycation anyone?

Traveling local (within your states current guidelines) is still possible and can be a great way to get away while not going far from home. Derrick isn’t allowed to travel outside of the state (Virginia) without having to quarantine for 14 days on his return. That isn’t a great use of hard earned annual leave! Therefore, we have to be very careful what we plan.

Christmas in Nice – Provençal Christmas Traditions

Christmas in Nice - Provençal Christmas Traditions

Missing France……

Celebrating Christmas in Nice is similar to celebrating in the United States. The sprit of the season is all about family and traditions.

How We Celebrated Christmas in Nice

Holiday decorations at the grocery store

Although it may not have met our abnormally sophisticated expectations, there was some level of holiday decorating throughout  Old Town Nice and some decorations on apartment balconies. The most popular outdoor decoration was a climbing Santa which seemed to be present on 4 out of every 5 apartments.  Old Town and the main squares were decked out with a fair amount of lights and other decorations.  But we did miss being in the US and seeing all the houses lit up as if in a competition.   It was our little tradition to drive around trying to find the gaudiest light displays or to take walks in the evening to see which of our neighbors put out the tackiest Santa.

Celebrating Thanksgiving in France – Sharing an American Holiday with French Friends

Celebrating Thanksgiving in France

A look back at Thanksgiving 2015!  While we missed family, it was a fantastic day with friends!

This Thanksgiving was the first time we haven’t been home in the US to celebrate. Celebrating Thanksgiving in France was an educational experience, a little bit sad, and, as it turned out, a lot of work!!

Since we didn’t have family to celebrate with this year, we planned a big Thanksgiving dinner with another American family.  It was nice to have others that understood the tradition and to help share some of the cooking-particularly since, stateside, I was always given pie making duty.  No one was ever crazy enough to assign me anything more difficult.

What started out as a small(ish) celebration with just two American families, turned into a massive sixteen person extravaganza.   In terms of our usual Thanksgiving gathering, sixteen is still small, but we could only fit so many people inside a tiny French apartment.

As it turns out, the French (or those that we know well) are fascinated with the idea of Thanksgiving. What we see as a normal holiday, the French see as an intriguing American tradition.   I guess you can’t get more American than celebrating pilgrims, indians, stuffing ourselves with food, watching football and giving thanks for our blessings.
