Discovering Tulips in Holland – The Beauty of Keukenhof Gardens

Keukenhof tulip gardens

No visit to Amsterdam in the springtime is complete without spending time at Keukenhof Holland, the most beautiful spring garden in the world – with millions of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and more filled the garden with avalanches of colors. I can’t remember ever exploring a garden that overwhelmed my senses like Keukenhof.

Keukenhof Holland with Kids

From the moment we entered Keukenhof gardens, we were awestruck by the vast beauty of the land and the myriad of tantalizing fragrances. The dreamworld of bright colors surrounded us as our noses led us from one display to the next.

An interesting feature of Keukenhof tulip gardens is that the bulbs are provided by almost 100 Royal Suppliers. There are signs near each bed listing the bulb suppliers information. If you like the product, you could place an order straight from the source.  It’s probably a good thing I don’t live in the Netherlands or I would have left with a bill for a bag of bulbs (say that five times fast)!  A garden designer works with the suppliers annually to create a special design for each company.  It’s an intriguing partnership between the supplier and Keukenhof.

Keukenhof Holland History:

Where Does Tulip come from

The name Keukenhof means “kitchen garden” and dates back to the 15th century. Countess Jacqueline of Bavaria would gather fruits and vegetables from the surrounding woods for the kitchen of Teylingen Castle. In 1641, Keukenhof Castle was built, with the estate expanding to over 200 hectares. Then in 1949, a group of flower bulb exporters and workers decided to make the estate a permanent exhibition to showcase the spring flowering bulbs. Keukenhof has since grown into a world famous attraction.

Cork and Blarney Castle Tour – Our Day Trip from Dublin with Extreme Ireland

Day Trip from Dublin

We finally made our first trip to Ireland! Trying to see a representative portion of the country in six short days took a considerable amount of planning.  We considered a road trip, but I was a bit nervous about driving on the opposite side of the road.  After a lot of discussion, we decided to base ourselves out of Dublin and take a day trip from Dublin to other parts of the country every other day and leave the driving to someone else.  We could get a taste of what Ireland had to offer and maybe even discover places we wanted to visit again.

One of the things everyone said we HAD to do while in Ireland was to kiss the Blarney Stone. My first thought was “why do people kiss the blarney stone?” I wasn’t sure I wanted to put my lips on something thousands of other people have kissed, but as a veteran traveler you have to be game for almost anything.  Besides, we would be visiting a castle to kiss it and that is one place I think all kids like to explore.

The day after arriving in Dublin, we jumped on board a comfortable coach with Extreme Ireland to visit Blarney Castle and Cork.  The day started off EARLY – with the bus leaving at 6:50am!  We had a lot to pack into one day.

Our guide, Jennifer, greeted us and gave a brief itinerary for the day.  I was thrilled to learn of a coffee stop planned about an hour into our drive as I was in desperate need of my morning caffeine.  The apartment we rented didn’t have a coffee maker and none of the coffee shops opened before 7am.  You do NOT want to be around me when I haven’t had coffee!

As we drove out of the city, Jennifer gave us a bit of Dublin history.  Of course, some of that history included Guinness.   In 1759, Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease.  I thought maybe I had heard that number wrong.  Who in their right mind signsa lease for 9,000 years?  I did a google search the next day and sure enough, Mr. Guinness was an optimistic man.  Only 8743 years left!

Nice Carnival Parade in Pictures – One More Reason You Should Visit Nice in February

Carnival Parade in Nice, France

One of the winter highlights along the French Riviera is the Nice Carnival.  Each year, a million visitors attend Carnaval de Nice enjoying the fun, sea, sunshine and Niçoise cuisine.

The 2016 theme was King of Media (Roi des Médias).  The floats this year didn’t disappoint with their big head construction, jabs at over consumerism and even portrayed our obsession with cellphones.  I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Queen had cellphones coming out of her head!

The carnival parade included a procession of 16 floats and entertainment from over 1,000 musicians and dancers from across the world.  The high energy event takes place day and night on the Place Masséna with adults and children dancing, throwing confetti and spraying of silly string.  Your senses will be awash of thumping music and an array of colors splashing across the sky.

Take a look below at some of our favorite floats and entertainment from the event. The carnavaliers are true masters of their craft and incorporate impressive details into the floats.

A few interesting facts:

  • There were 44 performing groups from 10 countries including Colombia, Korea, Croatia, Spain, France, Italy, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, and UK.
  • The 16 carnival parade floats were 12 m long by 3 m wide (39.4 ft X 9.8 ft) and from 8 to 17 m (26.2 ft – 55.8 ft) high!
  • There were 180 animation elements including the traditional big heads.

5 Reasons Not to Miss the Nice Carnival Battle of Flowers {Carnaval de Nice Bataille de Fleurs}

Nice Carnival Battle of Flowers

Sitting in the stands along the Mediterranean Sea, confetti, silly string, streamers, and the fragrance from thousands of flowers swirl through the crowd. It’s almost time for the Nice Carnival Battle of Flowers to begin!

Kids cram against the rails, arms stretched out hoping to grasp the first of the yellow flowers being thrown to the spectators.  Music blares, horse hooves clip clop along the street and acrobats on stilts smile at the audience while clapping their hands in the air.  Everyone waving their arms hoping to take home the party favors of the event – FLOWERS.

Beginning in 1876, the 1st Bataille de Fleurs or Battle of Flowers emerged. Originally, young ladies dressed in their finest clothes and in decorated carriages paraded down the Promenade and exchanged bouquets of flowers with each other and admirers. Even though the event has evolved, the same elegance remains.

Our 1 Year Travel Anniversary – 2015 in Review

January 23, 2016 by Dana Zeliff 2 Comments

Map of 2015 Travels

On January 22, 2015 we left Virginia to begin our year of travel and adventure.  We had already applied for and received (no easy feat) our French visas and had spent plenty of time researching our decision and formulating a plan to make Nice, France our base for the remainder of 2015.

After an overnight flight, we arrived in France on the 23rd. The first few months were anything but easy.  Moving to a country where we didn’t speak the language, trying to get a French bank account, dealing with someone using my bank card credentials to almost clean out my US bank account  (another story that ends well) and missing extended family that, in the past, were always there to rely on, led to a fair amount of stress!

While we had our share of struggles, it was an AMAZING year.  The kids are on their way to speaking fluent French (while I’m just about hopeless in the language department). K wants to learn Italian next. He’s already learned a little from his school friends as well as a smattering of Greek and Spanish.

Nice France Sunset

Starting  in January, we explored Nice and the surrounding area.  We learned how to shop at the fresh markets, how to use the bus and tram systems like pro’s and began paving our way (somewhat) to becoming French residents.

Homeschooling was also a huge adjustment.  We  arrived in Nice during the middle of the school year and didn’t want to throw the kids into a school where they couldn’t  yet speak the language. We also wanted to be able to jet off and travel whenever we felt the urge. Having to wait for a school holiday can put quite the damper on spontaneous travel plans!

Homeschooling was never something I desired to do.  It took us awhile, but we finally made it work.  By homeschooling the kids , I was able to learn their weaknesses and focus on those areas for study.  The kids used a standard VA curriculum in addition to having Europe as their classroom.  In Antibes, we explored a tidal pool, later researching online the sealife we found.  There’s also  a Picasso museum there , so we studied the life and works of Picasso as part of our education.  The kids learned about wine making in Costa Brava, Spain and Gladiators in Rome.  We’ve discussed the different religions of the world, and the kids have learned to say “thank you” and “hello” in multiple languages.
