How to Pick the Perfect Cruise Staterooms for Your Next Holiday

April 9, 2017 by Dana Zeliff 2 Comments

There are many decisions to make when selecting a cruise-which cruise line should you sail with, where do you want to go, how long of a cruise will you take, what are the best cruise staterooms for your holiday?  Not all cruise lines have the same amenities and destinations and not all staterooms (or cabins) are created equal.

Your cruise stateroom is a floating hotel room , a hotel room where you spend a fair amount of time as you progress from port to port.  It’s considerably smaller, but offers similar features such as daily cleaning, turn down service and room service.  Just as when determining which hotel room level suits you during your land travels, you’ll need to pick from multiple cruise stateroom options. So, how do you decide?   We’ve put together a few tips to help you pick the perfect cruise staterooms for you and your family.

1. Determine your budget – Stateroom categories vary by price, so,  before you pick, you’ll need to decide how much you can afford to spend.  I suggest putting together a budget and researching prices before you make final plans.  Factor in the price of the cruise, accommodation and meals before and after your cruise (if applicable), transportation to the ship (flights, gas & parking fees, train tickets), beverages, excursions and gratuities.

Also, look for cruise deals before making your purchase.  You might find our Caribbean cruise money saving tips article to be helpful to keep more money in your pocket.

You may be able to get a free onboard credit, free drink package or kids sail free offer.  Don’t forget to look at what amenities are available with upgrades.  You might find that the added perks of one stateroom over another will level out the expenses.

Our travel budget planner might be a helpful tool for recording the numbers.

What You Need to Know About the MSC Magnifica Cruise Ship Plus European Itinerary

March 20, 2017 by Dana Zeliff 5 Comments

You’ve booked a cruise, but want to know a bit more about the MSC Magnifica cruise ship before you sail off on the high seas? We’ve got that info for you!! We came back from an 11 night cruise on the MSC Magnifica a few weeks ago.   It was a fun trip and we learned a ton of information about the ship.  We’ll break down some of the data, so you’ll be prepared for your sailing.

The MSC Magnifica cruise ship is a Musica-class ship. It was the 4th and final ship of this class.  The ship was nice ,but a bit worn, having been in service since 2010.  It helped that the crew did a good job of keeping it clean.  The ship carries just over 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew.   This is not a Mega ship, but still had plenty of amenities to keep my kids entertained and it was a good size for cruising around Europe.

We were lucky during our sailing as the ship wasn’t at full capacity.  There was plenty of space to get away from the crowds and relax with a drink as we glided across the sea.

Staff –

Most of the staff were friendly & great with the kids. We had read reviews of extremely rude staff, but for the most part, we didn’t find this to be the case.  That’s not to say we didn’t come across some rude crew members, it just means that most were friendly, considerate and tried to make our cruise pleasurable.

Our room steward and waiters at dinner were especially great.  Our room steward was on top of things.  Most mornings we left the room for breakfast and returned an hour later to find the room already cleaned.  We didn’t get towel animals, but I’ll take  a clean room and fresh towels over lame towel animal art any day.

Getting From Katakolon to Olympia Greece: Travel Tips with Kids

March 11, 2017 by Dana Zeliff 2 Comments

We docked in Katakolon, Greece on the 4th day of our MSC Cruise.  A must do when sailing into Katakolon is a visit to the site of the ancient Olympic Games.   Getting from Katakolon to Olympia, Greece was easy, as we had pre-booked a tour to Olympia with Katakolon Express instead of taking the MSC offered tour.

Olympia is where the ancient Greeks came every 4 years to celebrate the sacred games dedicated to Zeus. We had a preconception of Olympia being a town. This turned out to not be the case. It was not a town, but rather a sanctuary with buildings associated with the games and worship of the gods.

Our knowledgable, licensed, local tour guide took us around the archaeological site, showing us the temples, athletic stadiums and sanctuary. He even had Lucy stand on the podium where the winners stood thousands of years ago!

Norwegian Jade Rooms – What Does a Balcony Room Look Like?

What Does a Norwegian Jade Balony Room Look Like

One thought that always comes to mind when planning a cruise is “What do the staterooms look like”?  Is the room large enough to comfortably fit my family of four?  Does the room have plenty of storage?

We recently sailed on the NCL Jade and chose a balcony stateroom. While it’s more expensive than an interior room, I like the extra space a balcony provides and obviously, the view.  It’s also where my husband and I escape to in the evenings, while the kids sleep.

Our Stateroom #9082

Balcony on NCL Jade

Norwegian Jade Rooms:

The balcony rooms on board the NCL Jade are approximately 205 sq. ft. with a 38 sq. ft. balcony. This is slightly smaller than some other staterooms, but is well designed with  function  in mind and makes good use of the space.

There are floor to ceiling glass doors leading from the stateroom  to the balcony. The balconies are large with plenty of room for all four of us to enjoy the outdoors at the same time.  You’ll find a small table for your wine, coffee or book and  two chairs for relaxing as you watch the scenery go by or, to be technically correct, as you go by the scenery!

Walking into the stateroom, you’re presented with an immediate view of the sea or port.  The staterooms are an inviting, open area providing plenty of space and abundant storage.

Norwegian Jade Closet

You’ll find the closet area on one side and bathroom on the other as you enter.  The closet area is generous with plenty of room for clothes, shoes, odds and ends and luggage, if necessary.  Open shelving provides a place to stash most of your clothing. I designate a shelf to each member of the family. You’ll also find a safe- perfect for stashing passports, extra cash, jewelry or iPads.

Robes on NCL

Opening the double doors of the closet reveals a location to hang items, organize shoes on the floor or stash a suitcase. Two robes are also provided for your comfort and convenience.  Life jackets are stored on the top shelf within easy reach, but hidden out of the way.

Is the NCL Ultimate Beverage Package Right for You?

September 29, 2015 by Dana Zeliff 40 Comments

Norwegian Cruiseline Beverage Package Facts

One thing I must admit.  I tend to drink more while cruising.  Maybe it’s because on a ship, my movements are limited or because there are bars everywhere or  because I don’t have to drive anywhere or just because cruises are vacations and a place to let go.  Whatever the reason, you can drop some serious cash on alcohol, if you’re not careful.

We were lucky enough to get the Ultimate Beverage Package for free as part of a booking promotion.  YAY!  I think that also played a role in my drinking outlook…

There is a new More at Sea promotion with a new Unlimited Open Bar package instead of the Ultimate Beverage Package. The information below is no longer valid.
