Are Cruises All-Inclusive? Learn What’s Included the Cruise Fare

I have a friend planning her first cruise.  She was shocked to learn about all the “extras” she’d have to consider. She thought cruising was like an all-inclusive resort – just on the water. But that’s not really the case, with the exception of river cruises and luxury cruise lines.

The first thing to note is that it is possible to take a cruise and not spend a penny more than your cruise fare, taxes and gratuities. However, there are a lot of additional expenses you need to to be aware of that can add up quickly. The good news is that you can purchase some of these add-ons in advance, as a package, to help alleviate the shock of a high shipboard account balance at the end of your cruise.

Cruise fares may seem quite high, but they do include almost everything you need for an awesome vacation. Your accommodations, transportation, food and entertainment are provided at one cost. When you breakdown everything that’s included, a cruise can be a budget friendly way to travel.

The cruise fare includes:

How to pick the perfect cruise ship

Are you considering taking a cruise for your next family vacation? Great idea! Cruises offer some amazing value and choice for family vacations.

Although, deciding to take a cruise is only the tip of the iceberg. With so many options, you will want to make sure you pick the perfect cruise for you and your family. So getting everyone involved in the planning process is key. But, where do you begin?

Hopefully, our six simple steps on how to pick the perfect cruise ship for your next family vacation will help.

Cruise ships venture to all corners of the global, including Alaska.
Cruise ships venture to all corners of the global, including Alaska.

1. Decide on a Location

Most likely you are thinking of cruising to a tropical destination like the Bahamas or the Caribbean. While about a third of all cruise travel does occur in this region, cruise ships sail to destinations all over the globe, including Europe, Asia, and Australia. So, don’t limit your options just yet.

If you already know WHEN you want to cruise (e.g., in the summer), you can use that information to narrow down your destination as some areas of the world only offer cruises during specific months of the year. If you can travel any time of the year, you will have more flexibility on location.

Guide to Picking the Best Cruise for Your Family

Not all cruises are the same. An uncontroversial statement, sure, but for non-cruisers it might be hard to understand quite how many options there are to choose from when it comes to picking the right cruise for you and can certainly become overwhelming. Whether you are looking for the best weekend cruises or the top 3-week voyages, a Caribbean adventure on the high seas, or sail up the Norwegian fjords, cruising options are almost limitless. Read on for a few hints and tips on choosing your perfect cruise vacation.

Know your budget

Setting your budget will help narrow down your options considerably. As a general rule, smaller boats are more expensive, and obviously the higher the budget the more luxury you can expect. Features, perks, and amenities all often come with a cost, so working out what you can afford is a good starting point. It might also help to have a list of must haves and nice to haves when determining what you might splurge on and what you might save on. For example you might care more about your cabin and want one with a view or you might want to save that cash and spend it on an excursion or two.

MSC Cruise Travel Secrets: 20 Tips & Tricks for Sailing with MSC

March 3, 2020 by Dana Zeliff 60 Comments

We’re avid cruisers and love traveling by sea.  We recently sailed onboard the MSC Magnifica and felt compelled to share some of our MSC cruise travel secrets with you!  MSC Cruises is completely different from the other cruise lines we’ve sailed – Royal Caribbean, Disney, Carnival, NCL and Virgin Voyages.  It’s a European cruise line and, as an American, that takes some getting used to. But that’s all part of the experience!

MSC stands for Mediterranean Shipping Company and, just as the name implies, they were originally a container shipping company.   In 1988, the Aponte family got into the cruising business making MSC the largest privately owned cruise company in the world.   Today, MSC Cruises is the leading cruise company in the Mediterranean, South Africa and Brazil.

MSC Cruise Travel Secrets: Tips & Tricks for Sailing with MSC

Don’t over pay – The tips start even before you sail!  MSC is always offering some type of deal, so you should never pay full price for a cruise. During our recent sailing, they were offering kids sail free and two for one. We’ve found MSC to be competitively priced and a good value for the money. MSC has also been offering special rates with drinks and wifi included.

Sign up for the MSC newsletter, so you’re aware of new special offers.

Kids sail free – Look for kids sail free offers. Kids 11 and under sail free and special rates are given to kids aged 12 – 17.  You’ll only pay taxes and port charges!  This helped make sailing with MSC extremely affordable for families.  I couldn’t feed the kids for 11 nights at home for the amount we spent for their tickets. This is not offered on all sailings, so keep a look at current offers.

Choose your experience – MSC has several experiences you can purchase to enhance your cruise. Each experience provides different benefits and also dictates which staterooms are available for booking.

  • The “Bella” Experience is perfect for budget savvy travelers.
  • The “Fantastica” Experience offers more ideally located staterooms, free room service, and a discounted drink package.
  • The “Aurea” Experience offers access to the thermal area, access to the solarium, free room service and more. Read our review of the Aurea experience HERE.
  • The MSC Yacht Club offers all-inclusive amenities and is the top tier experience for cruisers.

*Update* The newest ship, Disney Wish, will set sail January 2022!!!

Disney vacation cruises are amazing – magical even!  We sailed on the Disney Fantasy and learned tons of Disney cruise secrets that I hope will help you be prepared for your Disney Cruise.

Some of these Disney cruise secrets will save you money and some will save you time.  All will help make your first cruise even more magical!

Disney Cruise Secrets:

1.  FREE Soda – Okay, this really isn’t a secret but you may not realize that you can get free soda on a Disney Cruise.  No more paying for soda cards!

Soda is free from one of the soda machines found on the pool deck and during dinner.  If your itinerary includes Castaway Cay, you can also get free soda on the island.  You can’t get free soda from the bars or from room service.  Silly, I know.

2.  Pack Your Own Princess and Pirate Costumes – Kids will want to dress up during the Pirates IN the Caribbean night.  Bring your own pirate or Caribbean inspired costume for more pirate fun and to save money – you don’t want to be tempted to buy a costume on board for big bucks!
