There’s something about small-town Virginia that just feels relaxing and Staunton captures it perfectly.
Nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, this charming town blends history, art, good food, and mountain views into a getaway that’s easy to love.
Whether you’re planning a quick weekend trip or passing through on your way to Skyline Drive, here are 10 fun things to do in Staunton, VA. My big kid is currently at JMU and my cousin lives in Staunton, so I’ve visited quite often and wanted to share some of my favorite restaurants and local gems.
10 Things to do in Staunton, VA
1. Stroll the Historic Downtown
Staunton’s downtown is a postcard come to life. Cobbled streets, 19th-century buildings, and over 100 locally owned boutiques, cafes, and galleries.
Wander along Beverley Street and pop into Latitudes Fair Trade Store, Design @ Nine or The Staunton Antiques Center.
Travel tip: Go slow. The joy is in browsing, people-watching, and stumbling upon treasures you didn’t know you needed.
2. Catch a Show at the American Shakespeare Center
If you’ve never seen Shakespeare performed in candlelight, you’re in for a treat. The Blackfriars Playhouse is a re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre and it’s every bit as atmospheric as it sounds.
Shows are intimate, lively, and interactive. Grab a balcony seat if you can! I have a friend who plans visiting to the area around the performances.
Book tickets directly
3. Explore the Frontier Culture Museum
An outdoor living-history museum where you can wander through old farmsteads, see costumed interpreters, and experience what life was like for early settlers. It’s fascinating, hands-on, and perfect for kids and adults.
History buffs should plan 2–3 hours to explore comfortably.
4. Dive into History at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum
History buffs, here’s another one for you. The 28th President’s birthplace and museum are right in downtown Staunton. You can tour the house, browse exhibits, and learn more about early 20th-century America.
Combine it with a walk through the historic Gospel Hill neighborhood for a picturesque afternoon.

6. Take a Scenic Ride on the Virginia Scenic Railway
All aboard! The Virginia Scenic Railway departs from Staunton Station and rolls through the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. It’s a relaxing way to see the countryside, especially in fall when the leaves are on fire.

Staunton’s food scene punches above its weight. You’ll find cozy cafes, craft breweries, and farm-to-table restaurants all within walking distance.
