When most people think of Virginia Beach, they picture the bustling boardwalk, packed summer crowds and the iconic King Neptune statue. But after spending years exploring every corner of this coastal city, I’ve found that the real magic lives just beyond the tourist hotspots.
If you love chasing hidden spots, quiet beaches and authentic local vibes, this guide is for you. Here are my favorite hidden gems in Virginia Beach – places where locals go to relax, recharge and rediscover the coast.
1. Pleasure House Point Natural Area
Tucked quietly between Shore Drive and the Lynnhaven River, Pleasure House Point is one of Virginia Beach’s best-kept secrets. It’s a peaceful mix of salt marshes, forest trails and waterfront overlooks perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding or a quiet walk at sunset.
I like to bring my coffee here early in the morning, when the mist still hangs over the water and the egrets are hunting breakfast. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot ospreys or even a dolphin pod offshore.
Tip: American Brew is located right at the Lesner Bridge to grab your own coffee for that morning walk.
2. ViBe Creative District
Just a few blocks from the main oceanfront, the ViBe Creative District feels like a completely different world. It’s colorful, artsy and packed with local character – think mural-covered walls, small cafés, and vintage shops.
Grab a latte at Three Ships Coffee, wander the murals on 18th Street and peek into The Alley Gallery. Every corner feels Instagram-ready, but it’s more than aesthetics – it’s a local hub for artists and makers who give Virginia Beach its soul.
Tip: Check out the North End Bag Company for handmade bags. I own two!
3. Sandbridge Beach
When you crave ocean air but want to skip the crowds, head south to Sandbridge Beach. It’s about a 25-minute drive from the boardwalk but it feels like you’ve entered another world. The dunes are taller, the sand is softer and the vibe is pure relaxation. Locals bring paddleboards or just walk the shoreline with their dogs. If you stay until evening, you’ll get one of the best sunset views in Virginia Beach.
Nearby: False Cape State Park is a stunning nature preserve accessible only by bike or foot. It’s one of the quietest beaches on the East Coast.
4. New Realm Brewing Co
New Realm Brewing Co feels like that rare mix of energy and chill. The space is huge! Rooftop views, string lights and a patio that’s always buzzing but never too crowded (usually). The beers are brewed in-house (Hazy Like a Fox IPA is Derrick’s favorite) and the food’s way better than your typical brewery fare.
Grab a seat outside, watch the sunset over the skyline and you’ll get why locals love this spot. There’s always a ton of events taking place, so don’t miss out.
5. Chesapeake Bay Beach (We Locals Call it Chick’s Beach)
Ask a local where they go swimming, and you’ll hear about Chick’s Beach. This bayside spot has gentle waves, calm waters and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s perfect for families or anyone who prefers a quieter vibe.
The sunsets here are unreal. The sky turns gold and purple behind the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the water mirrors the color perfectly. Bring a blanket, grab takeout from Taste Unlimited and watch the light fade with your toes in the sand.

Beyond the tourist crowds, these quiet corners of Virginia Beach are reminders of what travel is really about – slowing down, exploring deeper and connecting with nature and community. So next time you’re in town, skip the same crowded stretch of boardwalk for a day. Follow the locals, chase the hidden spots and let the city surprise you.
