Weekend Getaways Near Virginia Beach (Under 4 Hours Drive)

Because sometimes you need a little change of scenery. As much as I love Virginia Beach, sometimes the best adventures start with a quick road trip. Luckily, we’re perfectly positioned between the ocean, the mountains, and some of the most charming small towns in Virginia all within a few hours’ drive.

Whether you’re after quiet nature, cozy towns, wineries or just a new stretch of beach, here are my favorite weekend getaways near Virginia Beach. Each destination is less than four hours away and all perfect for a mini escape.

Weekend Getaways Near Virginia Beach

1. Williamsburg, VA – 1.5 hour away

History buffs and families alike will love Williamsburg. Walk through Colonial Williamsburg, explore Jamestown Settlement or take a thrill break at Busch Gardens. There’s something nostalgic about the brick streets and costumed interpreters that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. I can’t even say how many times w’ve visited the area but we just keep going back.

Don’t miss: Dinner at Amber Ox and a sunset walk through Merchants Square.
Stay: We love staying at Williamsburg Winery. Make sure to check online for discounts such as wine tasting and gift cards for the on-site restaurant.

See 13 Things to Do in Williamsburg for more details visiting the area.

2. Charlottesville, VA – 3 hours away

Wine, history and mountain views – Charlottesville checks every box. Visit Monticello, sip your way along the Monticello Wine Trail, and explore the Blue Ridge’s scenic drives.

It’s great for couples or a relaxing girls’ weekend. We just stopped by again for 1 night after visiting my big kid at JMU.

Stay: The Clifton Inn, Boar’s Head Inn or a vineyard cottage with a mountain backdrop. The Omni is also a great choice in downtown right at the Downtown Mall car-free zone.
Hike: Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive for an unforgettable view.
Drink: Glass House Winery & Brewery is a great option for wine and beer lovers. Derrick enjoyed their IPA.

3. Chincoteague Island, VA – 2 hours away

A quiet barrier island known for its wild ponies, Chincoteague is perfect for unplugging. Explore the Assateague Island National Seashore, kayak through salt marshes and watch the ponies graze at sunset.

Don’t miss: The annual Pony Swim in July!
Stay: If traveling with kids, stay at Jellystone Park with its seasonal waterpark.

4. Outer Banks, NC – 2.5 hours away

Head south to the Outer Banks where long stretches of sand and charming seaside towns  await. Climb the Currituck Lighthouse, fly kites at Jockey’s Ridge or explore Duck and Nags Head for beach-town vibes.

Local vibe: Quiet, breezy and nostalgic in the off season

5. Richmond, VA – 2 hours away

Virginia’s capital offers a perfect blend of culture and adventure. Visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, stroll along the James River Canal Walk or explore Carytown’s quirky boutiques.

Coffee break: Lift Coffee Shop or Blanchard’s Roastery.

6. Cape Charles, VA – 1 hours away

Just across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Cape Charles offers pastel-painted charm and calm bay beaches. It’s small, walkable and full of personality – think boutique inns, local art and wine by the water. This is also a great option for a quick day trip and you get a toll discount at the bridge tunnel with a 24-hour round trip.

Don’t miss: Brown Dog Ice Cream, Cape Charles Brewing Company, shopping at Table and Tonic and sunset over the fishing pier.

7. Fredericksburg, VA – 3 hours away

History meets heart in Fredericksburg, a small town on the Rappahannock River that’s perfect for a laid-back weekend. You’ll find 18th-century architecture, Civil War battlefields and a vibrant downtown full of cafés and boutiques. If you loved the historic charm of Williamsburg but want fewer crowds, Fredericksburg is your next stop.

Explore: Old Town’s antique shops and the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center.
Eat: Foode, a local favorite serving farm-to-table dishes in a historic bank building. The food is fantastic and budget friendly!

Make sure to read 10 Things to Do in Fredericksburg, VA: A Local Travel Guide before planning your visit.

8. Harrisonburg, VA – 4 hours away

Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, Harrisonburg is an underrated gem for outdoor lovers. It’s surrounded by mountains, hiking trails and small-town hospitality. Plus football fans won’t want to miss JMU Dukes games.

Visit the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, hike at Reddish Knob for stunning valley views and explore downtown’s breweries and restaurants. If you like cider, stop by Sage Bird for a flight!

Eat: Bella Luna Wood-Fired Pizza and Little Grill

Quick Road Trip Planning Tips

  • Beat the Bridge: Leave early to skip Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel traffic. Also be mindful of wind advisories.
  • Pack smart: Bring reusable bottles, snacks and playlists.
  • Go off-season: Late spring and early fall mean perfect weather and lower prices.
  • Check college calendars: When planning to trip to Fredericksburg, Harrisonburg or Charlottesville during the school year, avoid move-in, parent’s weekend and sporting events. Unless you’re going to enjoy those events – of course.

You don’t have to fly across the country for a great getaway. Within four hours drive of Virginia Beach, you can sip wine in the mountains, stroll through cobblestone streets, kayak beside wild ponies or unwind by a quiet bay. Each destination offers its own rhythm and every road leads you back to the coast, feeling refreshed & ready for the work week. Sometimes the best trips are the ones that start with just a tank of gas and an open mind.
