El Ventall Restaurant Review 1

El Ventall Restaurant in Blanes

During our time in Spain, we toured the Northeastern coastline along the Mediterranean which is named Costa Brava for it’s rugged landscape.  Over the coming weeks I will share our experiences at the seven family friendly restaurants we dined at during our travels.

Join me in our quest to experience Costa Brava through food…

Let’s start our culinary journey with the Southern most village of Costa Brava, Blanes. El Ventall Restaurant is conveniently located between Blanes and Lloret de Mar, serving high quality food using seasonal, local ingredients.

Dine inside the lovingly restored Mediterranean farmhouse or outside under the covered patio. Walking through the restaurant, you see hints of the old farmhouse alongside modern amenities.

We sampled the fixed gourmet menu and highly recommend going this route. You’re getting the best of the best with this selection.

Meat Anyone
Ham anyone?

The other fixed menus include a menu of the day, a seasonal menu and specialty dishes. There is a standard menu as well if you prefer selecting your starters, entrees and desserts separately. Regardless of the menu you choose, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything at El Ventall!

El Ventall appetizer

We arrived at the table and were immediately served olives and bread. Our appetizer was Cebiche de corvina con escabeche de naranja, crudités de tirabeques y cebolla de Figueres or Ceviche marinated sea bass with orange, cruditñes of snow peas and onion Figueres.

What an amazing dish!

I have never tasted anything like it before – in a good way! It was absolutely delicious.

scallops at El Ventall

Our starter, Vieiras a la plancha con salteado de guisantes y crujiente de panceta or grilled scallops with sautéed peas and crunchy pieces of belly pork, was cooked to perfection. The scallops almost melted in my mouth.

fish entree at El Ventall

The main coarse, Ragout de merluza con habitas y dados de botifarra negra or hake ragoût with baby broad beans and chunks of black pudding, was absolutely wonderful. If I thought I could recreate such a culinary delight at home, I would.  But then I would be a chef and not a blogger.  All the flavors blended perfectly for an amazing dining experience.

Dessert was next, Semiesfera de limón con geleé de frutos del bosque or lemon mousse filled with cherry marmalade served with honey and lemon gelatin.  I was a little hesitant to try the dish as cherry and lemon aren’t my favorite fruits, but the combination worked so well together and was so light that I ate every last bite.

Cava at El Ventall

The restaurant also did an excellent job pairing wines with our meal. To start off our lunch we were served Cava, followed by white wine with our entrée. Everything was literally perfect.

Did you know?
Cava is a Spanish sparkling wine, most of which is produced in Catalonya.

Oh, the kids…..

Cannelloni at El Ventall

Kids dessert at El Ventall

The kids chose to eat off the children’s menu and just sample our dishes. K devoured his cannelloni and dessert trio. Can you believe the desserts the kids were served? Ice cream, a raspberry tart and chocolate cake!

However, after seeing and sampling the dishes put in front of us, K was a bit disappointed he didn’t choose the gourmet menu as well. He enjoyed his meal, but my 10 year old is turning into an amateur foodie. I guess the time is fast approaching when only one of us will be ordering off the children’s menu! Thumbs up to El Ventall.

It’s funny that you were hesitant on the dessert – this would have been my fav part! Then again, I love cherry and lemon! I had to admit, the kids food looks every bit as good as the adult menu!

Yum! I’m drooling as I’m reading! Everything looks absolutely divine! I think I’d have to order a couple of plates of those grilled scallops. I spent some time in Spain last summer and I have to say I just fell in love with the cuisine.
